Our Backyard
In an effort to find new ways to open up the outside world to The Littlest Buddy, and to hold off his bug crushing instincts a little longer-- I thought it would be fun to hit the backyard today, spend the morning exploring around our property armed with a macro lens and grab some shots of all of the inhabitants that keep our chunk of dirt in balance. The thought being that when LB gets home from school today we can go thru the pictures and make the connections that all of these things exist right in our own backyard, and perhaps he will want to take a deeper look now that he can see their little buggy faces. The grasshopper last week was a great first step. He stood back and took it in, and watched intently anticipating every hop. Each hop he would look over at me kind of like: "seriously?! That's how these things get around?" I can appreciate that television is a wealth of info for kids, and that there are in fact amazing educational shows that teach and expand their noggins. BUT... I start to get pissed when the only time LB has ever seen a turtle is some cartoon version of one that Diego is saving, or jackass Franklin walking around being witless and irritating. I want the kids to look deeper and appreciate what exists in their own backyards so they will want to move out past them and find more. So these are our first steps together, because I am taking on a new appreciation of the little things. Waking up the kid inside me that grew up in Florida. And not to get all hippie dippie on you, but I feel myself trying to make the reconnect with nature. As a kid I spent all of my days outside in the dirt, I helped my mother grow huge vegetable gardens on our property, our family would have harvest parties, we grew tons of citrus, we planted 2 acres of saplings that I watched grow into giant trees, I would fish, I caught blue crab, and crawfish, I ate wild black berries and citrus off trees, I knew how to grow food in the dirt when I was young. Then somehow I grew up, and started eating king sized value meals and I stay in the AC, and I am pissed I can't afford HBO. That isn't who I am.
So for your enjoyment, here is a little of what I found out there in our backyard. I got so nerdy excited this morning when I could see the sun rising into the horizon thru the reflection on a dew drop. It was like my own little mini version of the Magic Bean exhibit in Chicago. Laying out in the wet grass trying to take this picture for LB, I kept thinking about all of the things that we walk past on a daily basis and have stopped seeing. This little experiment for LB turned into a big life moment for me. A reminder of who I am, and where I came from, and it gave me an even bigger appreciation for my Mom and Dad and their choices on where, and how they raised me.
So anyway...

All the Love in the Universe ~ Me
*Update- because I have been getting some emails, and tweets, and comments asking to know the setup that I used to take these backyard pics I wanted to go ahead and let you know. (Although I don't like to advertise for Nikon because they never write me back when I ask them to sponsor me and send me new toys to play with) I shot these on a Nikon D300 mounted with the Nikkor 60mm 2.8 macro lens. They were all handheld and just a few inches away from the subject and then zoomed in once they were imported to show even more detail. Hope that helps :)

Awesome pictures!!!! They are truly great!!! And so glad to see that you were able to find that part of you that got burried under the grown up life things...you are very talented and LB can learn so much from you as you do from him!
My gosh, those are absolutely beautiful. I too feel a push to get back to nature. Maybe it's the upside to all the economic downturn - we're realizing again what is important and it isn't consumerism. We can hope, right?
I work at a camp, everyday, where all I see is nature...It's been a long time since I've actually stopped and "looked" at the wonders around me... Thanks for the reminder.
Also. I love photo #2. You think I could buy a print from you?
The picture of the grass reflected in the dew drop is absolutely breathtaking. So fresh and green.
Wow! Yea for nature, a spectacular camera, and a heart open to all forms of magic.
These are fantastic! These need to be published! Or framed! Or something.
I recently became BFF with a Praying Mantis living in my mom's backyard. I can appreciate your enthusiasm for these little bugs.
I am feeling the need to reconnect with nature too. It feels like it goes beyond the economy - but maybe that is a catalyst for wanting something more than THINGS - a craving for experience.
Are you KIDDING me?! These are GORGEOUS. And I love this post, hippie.
I'm impressed, you made bugs look pretty!
I appreciate the compliments on the pics, but I wouldn't feel good about making these prints. They were all hand held and the focus is just too soft :( they worked great for showing LB and the blog. I am always flattered that people like the work :)
@Jeremy & Kathleen - absolutely 100% nail on the head right. craving experience.
Wow, all that in your background?! I get the feeling someone should have taken my hand as a child & shown me this...
Great idea heading heading out to the backyard. I like the hippie you and I loooove the dew drop shot. I got very excited over finding an inch worm on our camping trip this weekend. Hope my shots turned out half as good as yours.
ha! I love the lizard eating the spider. What a great capture.
I always smile when I see kids around the neighborhood playing outside and exploring in the woods. Makes me think there is a tiny bit of hope left and not all kids have become TV/videogame zombies! (at least not yet)
You're backyard is amazing! And, you're right, the dew drop is fantastic.
Good Jesus! What lens and/or voodoo?
jackass franklin! HAHA! i effin hate that turtle!
beautiful pictures... though i'm terrified of bugs haha
Love the photos. Breathtaking!
Those are great shots. Beautiful and so crisp.
I'm sure LB will light up when he sees them.
OMG! These pictures are incredible!
My gosh those are gorgeous! The one of the lizard eating the spider is a creeptastic capture. I'm such a spider wimp.
You're so right about not appreciating nature anymore. When I was little, the private school I went to only had a big field to play in. So we ran ourselves ragged and looked at bugs and leaves and kicked around rocks. It was simple, but oh so fun.
I've started talking walks around my neighborhood and am noticing *houses* I've never seen before and we've lived here almost 15 years, along with plants and ants on the sidewalk. It's beautiful, really.
Ok. So cool!!!! I need to get a macro lense. It also makes me wish I hadn't moved my kids from rural New England (woods, fields all around) to the suburbia of Florida. Sigh.
Hope you and LB have fun with these when he gets home this afternoon.
So when are we going to start seeing your work in the National Geographic?? :) AWESOME pictures!!
Getting myself to go outside and actually look at what is around me is one of my favorite forms of stress reduction/antidepressant/antianxiety/etc. I'm at home when I'm outside.
Again, What?! In your backyard? Those?! I've obviously been living in the wrong states, because the most I ever see are bees and moths. My mind has exploded. Beautiful.
Do you live in an insect issue of National Geographic? That is more bugs in your backyard than I saw my entire time living in Florida - the one with the lizard eating the spider? Come on! What a lucky find. Just goes to show the difference between what is going on when you're looking vs. what goes on for you when you're not.
you could always get these printed for his room or laminate them so LB has something to carry around.
Seriously cool.
Those are all fabulous photos. My favourite is the dew drop onthe grass.
Our Peanut is at the stage where she thinks bugs are scary unless we're spending time actually out looking for them. Flying bees and wasps make her scream if she's doing something else, watching them fly from flower to flower is OK though.
Glad you're reconnecting with who you are.
your sense of renewed wonder and enthusiasm shows in each of these photos. thanks for sharing! i love the dew drop and the lizard best.
Beautiful photos, thank you so much for sharing.
A friend of mine recently told me about a beautiful introduction-to-nature activity that her family did when she was young and I thought I'd share.
Her mother got some caterpillars from the yard and put them in a mesh-topped terrarium on the dining room table.
Every day my friend and her sisters would check on them and their mom would teach them facts about them, how to treat them, what they eat etc.
Eventually the caterpillars spun cocoons and in time, emerged butterflies.
After learning about butterflies for a couple more days, they set them free.
These are STUNNING photos...I especially love the lizard eating the spider.
I planted a garden for the first time this year, and even in my tiny little plot of land, I get lost for hours, marveling at butterflies and spiders and flowers and the bounty that I'm growing for myself. That's not to mention that I'm often late for work and school in the morning because there's a muskrat on the bike path or a sandhill crane migrating overhead or a loon diving around in the lake looking for a little bluegill to eat. That we somehow lose touch with the beauty around us as we grow out of childhood is so sad...but we seem to be reconnecting with it. There is nothing that quite makes a day like seeing some awesome spectacle of nature in your own backyard.
words. fail.
i especially liked the food chain in action shot. yikes!!
the dew drop was my fave. colors amazing!
Awesome shots!
I enjoy looking at local nature shots on Flickr, and sometimes find photos of birds I didn't even know existed around my area.
I really really love these photos you posted. Like, magazine cover love.
neat neat neat!
What a wonderful project! Enjoy every little detail. This is such a gift for LB, too.
The dewdrop sunrise and staring down the grasshopper are my favorites! Great catch.
Wow.
BEAUTIFUL! makes me want to explore
The photos are amazing! I can't stop looking at the one where the spider is being eaten. I can only imagine LB's eyes open wide when he sees that one!
I wish I were more in tune with nature...
Whoa, those photos are really amazing. And holy shit, is that lizard eating a wolf spider? Those things scare the jeebuz out of me, as I grew up in rural FL and had my share of those bastards crawl on me when I was unsuspecting.
Wow! What beautiful photos!
Incredible! Like always :0)
great stuff!
we got rid of the t.v. when we had kids and it has been GREAT! you just won't believe how much time and imagination you all have without it. i'll spare you all the reasons to kill the t.v. . . .
Rad photos!! I especially love the one of the lizard with the bug in his mouth...
those are seriously awesome. my favorite has got to be the dewdrop on the blade of grass. the reflection is ridiculous.
i've always loved your photography, but some of these photos really blew me away. the grass? the lizard? the dragonfly eyes?
wow, dude. wow.
WOW! These are amazing pictures!
Wow - amazing images. I LOVE them all.
Drop dead gorgeous, and I can't believe these were hand-held! Unreal talent, seriously. How wide are you shooting here? And I'm curious as to what kind of macro lens you are using too. Will you enlighten on the technical aspects of the shoot? I'd love to know...
i love them! they are awesome!! =)
i can't believe you found all of this...in your backyard...this morning.
These are so beautiful. I nearly cried, they are THAT beautiful Ryan. How did we get to the point where we are these indoor androids? that disgusts me about myself. Ugh.
Excellent pictures! You have inspired me to go and try the same thing....it's the first day of spring here so hopefully we will find some creepy crawly things! Nothing wrong with getting all hippie.since I had my daughter and got ( a little) older I have suddenly discovered a love for my vegie garden, am hunting out wooden toys and am dead surprised at the mass consumerism of society and GE food (and if you say I am becoming my mother shhhh) oh and we loved the birthday song so if you do an album or we can buy - WE WILL x
seriously. these are crazy amazing. you made a FLY look somewhat beautiful :)
Those would be awesome to use in my science class (5th grade)! Grade pics!!
would it be possible to buy a print of the ladybug?
Wow! I can't believe you found all of those bugs in your backyard! That's so brilliant, that all those fascinating creatures are RIGHT there. Hope LB gets a kick out of it! :)
you are a very excellent photographer.
Oh holy, are you freaking kidding me? These are amazing. Truly. If I were Nikon, I would not only sponsor you, I would hire you. Pronto. Gorgeous.
Simply beautiful. I want a macro so bad!
Oh my Ryan....these are so fucking amazing!!!! Truly stunning photos! You need to be a photographer for National Geographic!!! You rock!
@ Keeper- :) HA! Where did that F bomb come from?! So unlike you. I am so far from being good enough for NG. But thanks for the compliment. AND the F bomb.
I really love the pictures. I try to keep my eyes peeled for the nature going on around me--daily. It's definitely hard sometimes, but when I take the time, there's this inner peace that comes with it. Thanks for posting these.
great pics - the last one is my fav!!! you are so talented!
HA. That picture of the lizard eating the spider just made me look twice at the bit of chicken in my lunch. Nice work :)
these pictures....are among the reasons why I am PSYCHED to have a son....now don't get me wrong, I'm not sexist....BUT....as a girl, I don't remember many days when I went exploring these kinds of things....
I can't wait to show Felix all of the creeptastic creatures that live in his own backyard.
FUN
I think you have this delicious ability to be in the right place at the right time. Great photos - and all in one morning!
AMAZING pictures, as always.
I love the lizard/spider mid-meal moment and am amazed at how much buggy variety you can find in a single morning. I am living in Brooklyn, NY and the proximity of urban madness has certainly taken it's toll on the critters around us. Plus, we don't have our own backyard to begin with.
these are AMAZING photos... i agree they need to be printed and framed as they would make wonderful artwork! :)
Ryan- You are a brilliant photographer. BRILLIANT! I wish you lived on my coast!
Your pictures are absolutely stunning! The nature pics, the pregnancy photos, everything. We are redecorating our front room for my son (we have another kiddo on the way) and you have nearly convinced me to do a nature theme. Now if only you had an Etsy shop or something where I could buy prints from you. Or a National Geographic magazine I could rip your pictures out of and frame myself.
Ryan, you have a gift. Seriously.
Oh my awesomeness. Amazing, amazing, amazing. You're the Bug Whisperer.
awesome! right there with you...love for my children to be outside exploring the world for themselves!
love that feather picture...they are all wonderful, though! now itching for a macro lens...thanks alot! ha!
~amanda
Man, you are good!
You should start a campaign asking all you readers to write to Nikon asking them to sponsor you.
Maybe it works...
What a great concept, to attempt to really SEE what is around you, in your backyard, literally. Love the pix.
Oh my gosh. These are beautiful! Absolutely amazing... LB is lucky to have you to do things like this for him!
The pics are beautiful. But these scary things are all in your backyard??? OMG! I would never go outside!
(I am such a girl!)
I am breathless. I am in awe. Your pictures are pretty amazing. The one with the lizard eating the spider gives me the heebie-jeebies, but it is still really freaking incredible!
My good sir, you are so spot on in this post. What is wrong with us these days? We're spoiled children with our tv (cable, dish, hbo, all of it), our ac, our video games. You have reminded me and countless others of the incredible wonders that are so close. We really do lose sight of natural wonders so quickly. We spend to much time on our phones, texting while we walk, not noticing what's around us.
Thank you, for sharing your findings. I am recommitting myself to putting away the technology, and making time to explore the world with my kids. Because, let's be honest, I'd rather look at bugs (that give me heebie-jeebies) outside (in the uncomfortable summertime heat) than sit inside watching another dumb kid show with music that never leaves my head.
Again, thank you.
OMG WHAT AWESOME PICS RYAN!!! My fave is the water drop with the reflection in it. I want to hang out in your backyard now instead of heading to a stuffy building for 8 1/2 hours lol. WOW, And how luck are those kiddos that you are the kinda dad that can remember to get down on your knees in the yard and introduce them to these little treasures? VERY LUCKY INDEED.Those kids are gonna be mighty fine I tell ya , mighty fine indeed !! ;)
Oh yeah if you ever open an Etsy or someway to purchase a copy of these I want # 2 as well !!!
These pictures are gorgeous! I especially love the one with the dew drop!! So beautiful and amazing.
Great photos! Macro photography is so hard for me but it is so amazingly awesome. I adore the dew drop one and would totally share in your nerdy excitement if I caught a photo like that. Don't you just want to stop everyone around you and say "Do you see what I just captured?!?"
These pictures are brilliant!
Fabulous photography man. I'm sure you feel they are not "perfect" but the rest of us are drooling. We all want a copy of the dew drop. It really is awesome. I wish I had a dad like you. I hope I can share some that same love of nature with my little boy and girl. I'm now living in FL after growing up in a sleepy little New England town. Very homesick at the moment, trapped indoors in AC while the sweltering hot outside is punctuated only by frequent downpours.
Wow. Your a true talent. Happy belated birthday LB.
HAHA Ryan I actually have a VERY horrible potty mouth...so does my hubby....and unfortunately we passed it on to our innocent looking daughters!! They are worse than me! :) I don't use it on my blog because my mom and in-laws read it.
I was just BLOWN away by your photography!! Seriously, just amazing!
My youngest, Tori, is taken photography this semester and is LOVING it!!! Her $400 worth of supplies arrived yesterday!
For some reason I couldn't post on baby Tangerine and the shots....so sorry she has had trouble with them. She is still so cute on her mommas lap crying and all!!!
Take care!
thanks for these Ryan
WOW - these photographs are spectacular Ryan! incredible stuff. i love them all, but really love the grass-filled dewdrop and the spider being devoured. AMAZING!
Are you SERIOUS?! These are amazing - you are so very, very talented. And the one with the lizard-thing eating the bug-thing (hm... am I out of touch with nature as well, perhaps?!) is crazy good. Love it all...
What type of camera do you use? You really should think about adding a link to sell your photography. Love to all!
What beautiful photos. You are so lucky to have all of these creatures in your back yard! I love the last one with the big and little bug.
Nice additions! I like the 2 bugs in the last one, also!
Amazing!
Curiously, my favorite is the one with the circle of life theme....
What a moment.
Peace - Rene
These are the most beautiful photos. I love your work. It is always so inspiring; whether it's your family, work or nature. They make me think off all the amazing nature videos by David Attenborough. He would be proud.
These photos are crazy. I am so impressed with your back yard! Lil.
these blow my mind. seriously.
Dude, you've got a lot of wild life in your back yard. Sheesh!
You have a great big beautiful backyard full of interesting things! And Nikon should be bending over backwards to help you out! AMAZING PHOTOS!
these are amazing
I was looking at JPG today and saw that there's a photo challenge called "your backyard" that ends tomorrow (10/8). You should submit one if you already haven't!
