Curl
While I get caught up on editing this week, I thought I would share some fun looks with you from the last show I shot out. I picked these selects because I am a HUGE fan of big curly hair, and noticed the artists were doing a lot more curly looks this year. I never understood why women who have gorgeous thick curly curls spend so much time battling it, and trying to keep it straight. Why do you hate your curls? Why?! I mean I have seen women down right get emotional and tear up while talking about how much they hate their curly hair at some of these shows I cover. How did this happen? Who did this to you?

I am old enough to remember when the girls in high school were doing that ridiculous messy heap of giant curly bangs, they did that little curl pointing down, and then the great big stupid curls going up. It was like a butt. AND, being new to using hair tools, many of them had to endure the embarrassment of the scabby forehead burn they gave themselves from their curling iron. I remember being a little kid and watching my sister do this procedure to her hair and being so confused. "Why are you doing that? It's so... BIG in the front. You burned your head!"
I will be caught back up soon. I have a new video I need to finish up for everyone :)

I chastise all my clients that have curly hair and don't wear it. I always send them out with a mess of curls, whether they like it or not. I was an even WORSE curly headed girl for years -I would blow dry my curls straight, then curl my whole head with a curling iron. It made no sense.
I love curly hair! Wish I had it!
There are a couple of forces at work making women hate their curly hair:
First, you always want what you don't have (hence me wishing I had curls and waves and other girls with such luck spending hours with a straightening iron every morning)
Also, a lot of women with curly hair don't get curls until they hit puberty, and then they have to figure out how to work with a whole new head of hair all of a sudden. I bet that sudden change contributes to some girls just trying to battle their new locks to get back to what they were used to.
In any case, great shots! Yay for big hair!
The humidity is what happened. I love my curls but when the humidity is bad then ugh. Pull it back otherwise it just becomes a mangled mess that no hand can come out of it.
PREACH IT, brother.
I on the other hand am one of those people with straight, no nothing hair that would do anything for some curl! In high school I always has a perm, but I never did that crazy thing with my bangs! Now, I try to keep it natural.
You need to talk to my sister. She has spent more time and energy and money keeping her beautiful wavy hair straight (even though EVERYONE tells her not to). And I, on the other hand, have spent almost as much on products to make mine bigger. C'est la vie.
i have come to love my own straight hair, but have always always wanted curls. i guess 4 kids with curly(ish) hair will do.
I love my curls! Even when they misbehave..
People always want what they can't have. I guess I'm lucky that my hair is somewhere in between.
My brother on the other hand, he straightens the shit out of his hair and dyes it black. So now he has burnt hair and looks pasty as shit.
Curly hair is fascinating though, mesmerizing.
i have curly hair that strightens easily. it's asically a head full of cowlicks. its not thick and volumous, i have tonnes of thin strands per inch, but it has an entre life of its own. i think my mom made me hate it. She still goes to the hair dresser once a week to have hers washed and done. So se really had no idea of what to do with my curly mop. i encountered a friend's neice who had beautiful thick curly hair and she was telling us how she hated it, that her mother was always fighting it and she wanted smooth hair like her mom. i related. so yah. curly hair cn be seen as a curse. (and yes, if i had had all the awesome products and straighteners avilable now back in the 80's I definitely would have been a less angsty teen. with less burns). so. yah.
GI have always wanted thick curly voluminous hair... Instead I have straight, simple, and flat hair... Cole has the best hair.. Its so thick and curly and fun.. I miss when I was her guinea pig... my hair never looked better.. Now its boring..
I love my curls!
You do the forehead pouf because everybody else does, and that's what people (well, girls, mostly, though of course you do it because you're all competing with each other for the attention of boys) think looks good at the time, and if you don't, there's some other girl in your face asking why you look so ugly because you don't curl your hair.
I suppose curly-haired girls and women have the same problem these days, only in reverse. Negative peer pressure is reborn in every generation.
If you want to know more about why women in this country HATE their curls, look up Tyra Banks' show episode 'good hair' and Chris Rock's movie 'good hair'. Real eye openers! My hair is just barely curly, and even I have been fighting it. No more!
I love my curls! and only recently discovered straightening but to be honest i could not be bothered with that procedure every morning. an extra 20 minutes in bed or get up to do my hair?? bed wins every time!!
Curls are great because i spray them with some water, a quick blast with the hairdryer and there you have it - a lovely curly mess of a do! I love it.
I have a straight haired 'friend' who used to tell me that i had to straighten it for going out as it'd look more classy... needless to say i only went out with her the once. Jealous she was. ;o)
This post rocks Ryan.... power to all my fellow curly haired girls... & boys!!

Those pictures are great!
I totally agree with you. I have bone straight hair and HATE it. I'd die for curly hair!
Humidity made us hate our curls, trust me! I've finally started to appreciate my curls though...just in time for my hair to stop curling the way it used to! Womens' hair is perpetually a cause of annoyance, I think it's just in our DNA.
I've always loved my thick mess of curly hair and how versatile it is, but I can see why it brings on such frustration in other girls. It can be difficult to tame! I mean if we all were getting our hair professionally done regularly (or had the hair styling skills of your wife!) I'm sure more ladies would appreciate their curls. But instead we just rock a ponytail when it's humid and pray for fall.
I just love your writing Ryan...this post cracked me up :)
Love hair shots for sure! Hey I saw a little blurb about you in a pregnancy mag today...talking about creating a photo memory for your baby or something (i was pumping at work so the details are a little fuzzy, lol) and referring to this website. Let me know if you havent seen it and I send you a pic!
I also do not understand why some people don't embrace their curly hair! It is so awesome- I wish my hair was curly, or would at least curl...
My Hair is a BAROMETER and have learned to embrace my curls... great shots Ryan!
Ever since I figured out how to do my own hair, I've been battling my curls. I've only recently started to leave it, just to get more sleep and stop wasting it burning my hair into straight lines.
It's a weird phenomenon, I wish someone would do a scientific study on it. ;)
I guess we have no many beauty queens or idols that use curls, everytime a girl is pretty, loved or endured a make over her her is straigthed up. I remember hating my curls as I grew up with straight hair idols and being bullied for my hair volume. Nicknames and jokes from relatives are also so mean, people dont cease to say things such as "go brush this hair". It changed when I fell in love for a man that adores my curls and he always says "every princess in the movies have curls". And he complains when my hair is not wild and natural and insists that I embrace and enhance my natural style with accessories and clothes that suit it. I have learned that self confidence and self steem are great gifts to pass along to kids! Now my battle is to protect my gorgeous nice from hating her golden curls.
I must add that I love this new trendy of assuming your curls even knowing this is all about selling curly hair stuff. I noticed that we learn how to hate curls specially when people compliment you when you Wear it straigth. Now I love my hair because people only compliment me when I have it natural, it is my trademark. You say my name people think "curls, lot of hair". In my country 60% of girls are curly, and 90% of them make it straigth. It is a miserable life of avoiding umidity, swimming pool and feeling crap about yourself. I moved to europe and start getting compliments, learning to accept. But I hate that I need people's approval to love my features. I am sure if I would be back to Brazil I would surrender to straigth hair. Patetic I know :(
I LOVE curly hair and have always been cursed with the straightest, least-curlable hair. I can't even add curls if I work at it for an hour a day; they just fall out within an hour. I have a friend whose hair went curly after she gave birth to her 2nd daughter and so now I'm sort of hoping this baby might bless me with curls :)
I have a crazy mess of thick curls that I keep (relatively) straight. If they weren't so damn hard to keep lovely I would keep them crazy. I love this post.
i <3 my naturally curly hair now that i have the right cut. :)
Love, love, love this post Ryan! Wish you would have caught me in time for Cole to style mine; let me know next time you need some crazy curls and I will bring mine over! Pictures are fantastic as always.
As for curls, check out Naturally Curly by Lorraine Massey; changed my life! All natural, organic, paraben and silicone free. Ringlets soon to follow!

i have naturally curly hair and i LOVE it!
i really think the reason a lot of people with curly hair don't like it is because they don't know how to take care of it. it's not like straight hair. you CANNOT BRUSH CURLY HAIR and expect it to look good (unless you are going for the frizzy teased look...then by all means, brush away).
it took me awhile to figure this out and once i did and really understood how to take care of my hair, i figured out how to make it look awesome.
i know it's hard for people to let go of their brushes...i mean society says you should brush your hair, but if it's curly, i'm telling you, don't do it! or in the least, do it only when it's wet.
~run your fingers through it when it's wet to detangle
~use gel and other hair products that help tame frizz
~use a hairdryer with a diffuser
~pick a stylist that understands how to cut and style curly hair!

CURLY HAIR ROCKS! :)

Random wanderer from the Internet here. I just had to say THANK YOU for loving curly hair. I admit to being annoyed with mine through most of high school, but when I got to college and realized that I could get up at 7:30, shower & breakfast & make it to an 8 a.m. class, and not have to worry about my hair because it still looked good? WIN. I have never looked back, and I do what I can to preach the curl gospel. ;)
I know this is like a year old so I'm being a creep, but curls are hard. My hair will start fine in the morning, and then be this frizzy mess six hours later (if it does start fine in the morning). And then if I straighten it, every single person will comment on how fantastic it looks. I'm so envious of girls/women with big, frizzless curls. I want that hair.
I need a hair cut.
