Tessa Meets the Beach

There is a blog I read that I have mentioned here before that keeps popping out of my google reader and catching my attention, and in some cases just completely inspiring me. The words and photos of Aura Joon have their own energy and vibe, and the way she presents those words and photos really makes me feel like I'm there, looking into her world and getting a real peek into her life. So when Aura posted pics from a recent East Coast Florida trip she took with her love, I sat in front of my computer safe in the air conditioning and thought, Holy Crap! that looks awesome. I am right here in Florida. Why am I not right there on that beach with MY family instead of sitting here in the house?! What is wrong with me? So I yelled out to Cole: "Let's take the kids to the beach in the morning!" and she said : "Okay!!!!"

We had been debating about when the right time would be to take Tessa Tangerine into the harsh beach sun for the first time. Ghosty little baby skin, she would cook in like 5 minutes. So we dipped her in SPF 1-trillion a few hundred times, packed some food and drink, and took everyone to the beach. We went out to a beach on the East Coast called Playa Linda. It is a natural preserve and nothing around it for miles and miles, there was a time when you could see the Space Shuttles sitting on their launch pads off in the distance from this beach, but now that President Obama squashed the shuttle program into the Stone Age that has just become an ancient story I will tell the kids that will show my age, "Ya know we used to be able to see Space Shuttles from here." and they will be like: "What's a Space Shuttle? That sounds made up." and I will be like: "No, it was real, it would take them like months to get one ready, and it would cost billions of dollars, and if it rained too hard, or a single screw came loose, they would rip the whole thing apart, and spend another billion to make sure that screw was tight again." And they will say: 'That sounds dumb." and I will be like, "yeah, I guess it kind of was."

Both Cole and I reminisced about our obsession with wanting to go to Space Camp when we were kids on the drive through the Cape Canaveral Preserve. I think I would still go to Space Camp. Anyone who reads here ever get to go?

I love this beach, because there is really nothing around for miles, and it feels like isolation and like you're farther away from home. The only drawback is that you can't see your car from the beach, and some asshole stole Cole's iPhone out of the car , and she had just got it, and is now stuck with a 2 year plan, and the only way to get a new phone is to pay the ridiculous full price for the phone, and 5 hundo is way too much to be able to play scrabble with your friends. Thieves :(

So we get there, we are all set up. I am terrified to have my camera near sand and water, but I want a shot of Tessa being hit by her first wave, and we get her out to the water, and sit her down, and the little wave comes rolling in, and she barely blinks, she might have even yawned. She just kind of looked back over her shoulder like, "oh it moves, that's cool... I guess. Have you seen the iPad? It's a revolution!!!"

However, we still had The Littlest Buddy in top form, exploding with smiles and glee over the beach. He was beside himself the entire time we were there. So it was a great payoff to have him so thrilled and happy.

And then we got so paranoid that Tessa was going to burn that we coated her in sun block wax and put her in a shirt, and hovered over her constantly.

The sad aside to all of this was thinking about the oil in the Gulf of Mexico creeping around the other coast of Florida and wondering how bad could it get-- watching Tessa and LB play in the water in kid bliss not knowing that there was even the potential of a black toxic mess that could come along and take away an entire beach, or an entire coast for that matter. I couldn't imagine standing at the beach with the kids, trying to explain to them why they couldn't swim and why everything was such a wreck. It would seem from watching the news the last few years, that kids will have new boogeymen to replace Wolf Man and Dracula, and they will fear Wall Street Bankers, and Oil Men a little more than the old fantasy monsters, because of all of the swearing and heartache that they caused their parents.

Ugh

All the Love in the Universe ~ Me

P.S. It's Cole's birthday today. She is a lady. A young gorgeous lady. Her present this year was all the sunblock we had to buy in order to take Tessa to the beach :)

P.P.S. Cole wanted me to write another note about our beach day, LB pronounces "Beach" like "Bitch" and he wanted her to come down to the water, motioning with his hand to come with him, while shouting "Mama come Bitch." I wonder if anyone heard this exchange and thought we were jerks for letting LB speak to us that way.

beautiful photos. Our beaches (Oregon) are rarely warm enough for days like this.
I'm sure I won't be the first to need to know, where is Cole's bathing suit from? I'm guessing American Apparel :)

I *always* wanted to go to Space Camp, but we couldn't afford it. My parents sent me to some "space camp" at a local school, which was fun enough, and we learned all about space and made our own space suits out of like, tin foil, and ate freeze-dried "astronaut food." It was like the low budget community theatre version of Space Camp.

I'm afraid of Oil Men. In three years living on the coast, I've become quite attached to my Folly Beach and would be devastated to see it covered in oil.

Great photos, as always- I can never get over how beautiful your family is! :)
Happy Birthday to Cole!

What a lovely family you have created and nurtured.

Thanks for sharing.

don't even get me started on the oil. It makes me cry.

Bridget May 25, 2010 11:45 AM

Ahh yes...space camp. My mom works at an aerospace elementary school back home in MN: check it out!

(cute pictures...what a pretty girl! and happy little boy!)

Kelsey May 25, 2010 11:54 AM

Amazing pics! Love Cole's cute short hair...my hair is about as curly as her's...wonder if I should go shorter. The thought of LB calling Cole to the beach saying "bitch" cracked me up and made me laugh out loud! You guys are lucky that you get to live so close to someplace so beautiful!

Mama Cas May 25, 2010 11:57 AM

I, too, was COMPLETELY obsessed with keeping my kids sunburn-free. But I was also convinced that sunscreen contained lots of creepy! chemicals! that would leech into baby's skin. So my kids pretty much never saw the light of day until they were a year old. Paranoid much? Yes. Much.

Mama come bitch. Funniest thing I've heard in DAYS.

Mrs Soup May 25, 2010 11:59 AM

Great shots! So glad you had fun!

And Man, Cole looks AMAZING!

kimalli1 May 25, 2010 12:06 PM

Space Camp- I never went, but it was one of my favorite "kid" movies.

In reference to the phone, I read an article on either msnbc or cnn today that wal-mart is cutting the price to $97, starting today. Just in case you are interested. Thieves suck.

leel May 25, 2010 12:11 PM

nice shots, as usual. bummer about the iphone. *shakes fist* and the oil spill *shakes fist*

let's go back to the great shots and LB saying beach like bitch. so sweet. OH and HBD Cole! :)

mrs boo radley May 25, 2010 12:13 PM

Beautiful family you have...and such lovely sun.

FunnyGal KAT May 25, 2010 12:14 PM

This is a complete aside, but check out eBay for used iPhones. You might pay a little bit more, but not in the range of $500.

Beautiful photos-- and happy birthday to Cole!

Amanda May 25, 2010 12:15 PM

Wow, that is an AWESOME beach! I used to live in Key West, but never appreciated it.

Sarah May 25, 2010 12:21 PM

Unlike you guys, despite growing up around Ft. Lauderdale and hearing all about space camp, I never, ever wanted to go. I don’t think that my parents would have agreed to it anyway, but I was terrified of the prospect after watching the movie space camp as a very young kid, and had no desire to go anywhere near it as a result. Anyway, thanks as always for sharing, and a very happy birthday to Cole!

Cyrie May 25, 2010 12:37 PM

Happy Birthday to Cole!

Ashleigh May 25, 2010 12:39 PM

I love this post!!
Especially the P.P.S :)
Happy Birthday Cole!!

Emily May 25, 2010 1:31 PM

Beautiful pictures!

This post is getting me excited for my own beach adventure: I'll be taking my little one to the beach/ocean for the first time this weekend ... We're from Ohio, so this is a big deal! Especially since it took his Dad 23 years of life to get to the beach! You are lucky that you are so close! :)

Lora May 25, 2010 1:43 PM

I thought that Play Linda was a nude beach? Is that not the case anymore?

Mme Paulita May 25, 2010 2:00 PM

we went to the beach this past Saturday. Its only until you are there and you have gotten yourself out of Orlando that you are like..why aren't we doing this more often..

so we are going back this Saturday too!

Allegra May 25, 2010 2:09 PM

love love love this post. so much that i've come out from lurking to comment. what beautiful children you have.

my son used to say f*ck for milk ... it was horrifying to us, but i don't think others noticed it that much ...

xoxo,
allegra

The Panic Room May 25, 2010 2:14 PM

@ Lora- The rumor has it that way down at the end of the preserve there is a part of the beach that nude bathers go. I think that rumor keeps the rest of the beach light on traffic, which is why it is such an awesome beach to go if you don't want to be around a bunch of other people. So yeah. TONS of naked people. All over the place. They jump out of the water at you. NAKED.

Cydney May 25, 2010 2:41 PM

Beautiful pictures and family! I love the "bitch" instead of the beach. That just makes me think of my grandmother who has a thick Korean accent and she's always calling it the "bitch" or the "peach" and my son who's always calling trucks "fucks". We always get looks when he see a truck and starts yelling "FUCK MAMA FUUUUCK!"

Lora May 25, 2010 2:51 PM

Hee- I will definitely tell that to everyone I know then (and go to the beach this weekend!)

Violent Delights May 25, 2010 2:54 PM

What a gorgeous beach! I wish we had the weather here to be able to pop to the beach whenever we feel like it, rather than waiting for the one weekend where temperatures are in the 20s (celsius) when everyone else has had the same idea. Stupid Scotland.

Happy Birthday Cole!

Pseudonymous High School Teacher May 25, 2010 2:58 PM

Thanks for adding the "momma come bitch," Love smiling while at work.

Now I'm off to check out your friend.

owl and peacock : melina May 25, 2010 3:05 PM

This was a fabulously written post, Ryan! I felt like I was there. I love your humor, I always giggle outloud.
My boyfriend would always go to space camp, but he went somewhere in Alabama... he freaking loved it, he's the biggest space/science nerd.
Oh, and again, Tessa+water=best thing ever. Love love love.
Happy day, Cole!

Visty May 25, 2010 3:36 PM

I grew up in Florida, and on the super sunny days we would just wait until 5 to go to the beach. Less direct sun, still warm enough for the water, smaller crowds, and best of all, when the sun goes down, the water feels warmer than the air.
I live in Oregon now, am freezing in my jeans and sweater, and am infinitely jealous!

Candace May 25, 2010 5:10 PM

Wasn't space camp always the big prize for completing the obstacle course on "Double Dare"?

Yes, always wanted to go. (and always wanted to run that obstacle course too. :)

Great pictures as always. My 2 year old got the first sunburn of his life last weekend, totally my fault too. Idiot.

Pamela May 25, 2010 6:05 PM

i love the bitch, too.
and cole's bathing suit? do tell where that bit o'lovely came from.

Jes May 25, 2010 6:07 PM

How fun! I love the beach, and kids at the beach, and how unafraid of getting sand EVERYWHERE they are!

I too would like to know where Cole's bathing suit is from!

sharalee May 25, 2010 8:46 PM

ha! i feel you about the sand & water...i swaddle my camera in my arms like its a delicate child in danger when i get near either.
sad about the oil too, these photos are so bittersweet with that in mind =(

Aura May 25, 2010 9:36 PM

You always make me laugh. I'm glad I got your butt to the beach! You're so lucky to be that close, we're a 5 hour flight away :)
Very sweet pictures, are you ever in them?! My poor Dad the photographer, he's not in any of our childhood photos. I think that might be your destiny.

Also, sad story. When we flew home, we flew over the Gulf, and over the oil spills. It was a silent, and utterly depressing flight as everyone crowded around the little plane windows.

PS, thanks for the link. So many wonderful readers have found their way over to my blog from yours. I always appreciate it.

PPS, do you guys visit St. Augustine, ever? We fell in love with it, and Michael is convinced we're moving there when he's done with school. That was hands down one of my favorite beaches, it had so many wonderful photo opportunities. I'm also a beach treasure hunter, and I think your little ones would love all the pretty shells to explore for.

Dustan and Betsy May 26, 2010 1:42 AM

i take it tessa got fair skin and LB got cole's? or do babies always start out with ghostly baby skin?

Renee May 26, 2010 2:36 AM

Great post about the kids & beach ("bitch") & oil.... and awesome pics again! And like the other ladies above, I love Cole's haircut & want to know where she got that cute swimsuit! Happy Birthday, Cole!

michaela May 26, 2010 2:57 AM

Her little swimsuit is freakin' adorable.

Sarah May 26, 2010 7:02 AM

That's too funny about LB's pronunciation of "beach!"

Also, sorry to hear that Cole's phone was stolen. I haven't lived in the US for two years, so I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but is it possible to get the iPhone at WalMart and get her plan back on it? I heard WalMart is selling the current iPhone model for $97. Then again, that sounds too easy, and I'm sure there's some ridiculous answer from AT&T as to why you can't do that.

Anyway, I also wanted to chime in on the space camp discussion. I, too, thought space camp sounded great, but I didn't get over my fear of leaving my parents for a week at a time until I was a bit too old for space camp. However, I was "lucky" enough to be a member of my elementary school's Young Astronauts club.

Later, in middle school, we had a teacher who had formerly worked for NASA and had this whole shuttle simulator system so in 8th grade, each class got to do a shuttle mission. I got to be the CAPCOM/OTC and loved every minute of it.

Vodka Mom May 26, 2010 7:05 AM

those were fantastic! And happy, happy birthday to Cole.

The kids made me smile.

townerson May 26, 2010 1:41 PM

Space Camp the movie used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid. If I watched it now, I'm sure it wouldn't have any effect. Oh, eighties.

Happy birthday Cole!

KateC May 26, 2010 4:39 PM

What a glorious day at the beach! Happy birthday to the lovely mommy!

Mama Dawg May 26, 2010 5:16 PM

Just FYI, that is my FAVORITE BEACH IN FLORIDA. Seriously, we discovered it when I was in middle school way back in the 90's. My mom refused to take me to Daytona or Smyrna but would willingly take me there anytime I asked. I love the sheltered aspect of it. No bouncing boobies or booties to be seen. Sigh........I can't wait to go back next month.

Belinda May 27, 2010 12:57 AM

Soo gorgeous! We all don't appreciate nature enough do we? My gosh your wife is one hot mumma too!

AngieS. May 28, 2010 3:19 AM

wow, I just fell in love with your blog after reading this. I stumbled upon it the other day I think from apartmenttherapy pictures or something? But anyway, I just love hearing the dad's side of things with their kids. I read a lot of blogs about new little babies, but they're all from mom's and I totally dig your perspective. On another note, I am now also a fan, as i realized that you are in Orlando, I myself was born and raised there, and visit frequently. My sister just bought a house in college park, so one of these days I will be back to hang. Your kids are precious, and the beach pics are wonderful-I miss that. (stuck in the desert right now.) I too am extremely sad to think about my fave beaches (Destin), being covered in greasy oil right now. It's almost too much to take. Thanks for your words.

Anna Elena May 29, 2010 2:11 PM

Cole's bathing suit is so cute! (Happy Birthday)

Wish we had fabulous beaches like that up here. Oh well... I feel warmer just looking at the photos!

Christine May 31, 2010 2:08 PM

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I'm so in love with your family.

Do you have an iPhone, and are you nearing the point where you can upgrade? My husband recently lost his iPhone, and I was at the point where I could upgrade my iPhone if I signed on to another 2-years. I upgraded to a new phone for $199, then he registered my old phone to his name under our account. (We ultimately worked it so that he got the upgraded version, cuz he is way more into that kind of thing.) It was a piece of cake at the AT&T Store!

coleface May 31, 2010 8:56 PM

I am borrowing the suit from a friend, until mine gets here. It is a vintage suit from the 50's or something like that. Sorry I have no help.
