Our One Year Old
Remember Me? When I was a baby? I think this might have been the first pic I showed of Tessa here... Is it?

It's over!
I have been waiting a year to officially pass by before I celebrated all the things Tessa did not do to me when she was a baby. I was starting to get worried she would squeeze in a couple of these towards the end. To say Tessa was an "easy" baby is under stated... So a big THANKS to the Tangerine for making my life as a Dad less disgusting and smelly and for keeping my clothes clean from poo, pee, and puke. This girl has never: Thrown-up. Never. Not once. Her drooling phase lasted all of a week. She never shit or pissed on me during a diaper change, she has never blown out her diaper so bad that I had to change her clothes when we were out on an outing together (she did do this to Cole once). She quite literally kept all of her excrement to herself the whole first year, and I couldn't be more pleased about it. I have no idea where she gets the iron stomach from, but she has one. I'm going to suggest it is from all the breast milk and yummy baby food she ate when her stomach was figuring out how to be a stomach. Who knows, but I do feel lucky.

"We just spoiled our daughter" is the text message I sent to Cole from the cab I was in, this was after I had just spent an hour in Tribeca at these two great kid boutiques called Shoofly and Torly Kids. Since I was going to be in NYC anyway, Cole thought it would be sweet to get Tessa her first pair of walking shoes from the big city, why not? Since I was there doing an event for Pureology, I asked my fashionable boss where she shops for her children, got some directions, and snuck away for an hour-- and literally went nuts. "What about that dress up there?" and "I better get her another pair in a bigger size for when she grows out of these." Things piled up, and next thing you know, Tessa had her first ever NYC shopping spree. We have yet to find any stores in Florida that aren't walls of pink and frill, and poorly made Disney character costumes, bleck! Don't get me wrong, we aren't looking for high fashion on a baby, we just don't like the "girl uniforms."
I flew back home late afternoon on Tessa's birthday on a solid two hours sleep from the night before (up all night editing, not partying)-- I sat next to an awful man that must have had bowling ball sized testicles because he sat with his legs blasted apart and practically on top of me, and his arms were covered in coarse long pointy black hair, it felt like someone was scrubbing my arms with a wire brush every time he would readjust and secure his elbow into my side. I just kept thinking: "make it home" and muttering my centering mantras of K.I.T. and D.G.C. (keep it together, and don't get crazy). As far as a birthday bash, we had decided not to do any kind of official birthday thing with me out of town the whole week before. Instead, we did a little photo shoot of her wearing her new digs when I got home, and we let her show off her new walking thing she does, we went to Publix and bought dinner and cake, came home, played, ate, got covered in icing, washed off the sugar in baths, and then played really hard with the children until they were sore from laughing. LB had just as much fun as Tessa, and was a big help in the candle blowing and cake eating portion of the birthday celebration.

These are the shoes I picked out for her at Shoofly, they are made by Garvalin
It's so good to be home and I can't wait to show you a sneak of some of the stuff I have been doing in NYC. I also wanted to say I am overwhelmed by the comments that have been coming in, and am just so taken aback by such sweet support and encouragement as all of this keeps growing. I apologize if you asked a ? in the comments and I did not respond, I have just not had the time and promise I am not blowing you off or ignoring you. I am just trying to get caught up, but THANK YOU, for the love in the comment section.

Happy Birthday Tessa!!
Ryan - Your blog is the sunshine in my life!!
bouquets & cheers to the 4 of you!! Have a wonderful second year:)
Congrats on one year of babyhood!! Now that you've announced all the things she didn't do to you - those things will surely all happen this year! ;) It's true - toddlers can spew excrement just as well (if not better?) than infants.
LOVE the walking photos!!
She is so precious...lover her shoes!
HBD to the Tangerine!! And you all, really. Let's hope she keeps her fluids to herself for another year. Nice to hear LB is enjoying his sister so much; I know that worried you so much in the beginning.
yay!
cute cute cute. love the dress and shoes. I am not a fan of pink and frilly either!
Beautiful, beautiful images! Congratulations to all of you!
How has one year possibly passed? Happy Birthday!
FAB shoes, darling. She is adorable.
Congratulations!
See you at BlogHer ;)
Happy birthday, sweet girl! You are totally spoiled, alright, but it is with all the love that clearly surrounds you and is evidenced by that toothy grin and baby exuberance seen in every picture your daddy puts on this blog. We have loved watching you grow from a little baby bump in that photo series to this toddler girl you have become!
I've been following you for about a month now and I love, love, love your perspective, photos and honesty. I look forward to reading your posts as soon as they pop up in my Google Reader. Happy Birthday Tessa (love her name!)
Hooray! Happy birthday little Tessa! (Who is not nearly so little as she used to be)
What cool shoes! Hooray for the excitement and the neat and tidy baby and hooray for all cute little things that aren't "girl uniforms!" I hate that stuff too.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Thanks for the year of photo updates and stories from the front lines...she's a doll! Good call on the dress...I've always thought little girls look awesome in blue.
aww, happy 1st birthday Tessa Tangerine! she's a doll, and i'd be spoiling her too if she were mine. glad to hear you guys all had a good birthday. :)
Ryan is going to be talking about taking photos for blogs at Blogher in August, maybe you should come!
Congrats on making it through the first year bodily-fluid free haha! But seriously, happy bday to your lovely little girl--she is so cute!
The Tangerine is so cute. Happy first birthday. I love that first baby pic of her.
Happy 1st birthday to Tessa!
she is just too cute!
Wow. I can't believe it's been a year already. Happy Birthday, Tessa!
Happy Birthday Ms. Tessa! She is just so beautiful :)
What a cutie. Happy Birthday.
ADORABLE! Happy Birthday Tessa :)
Happy Birthday Tessa!! Can I have your dress in my size?!
hey, that's great (wow a year, really?), happy birthday little Tangerine!
we don't really go for girl uniforms wither, so iris either dresses like a boy or like jane banks (the girl in Mary Poppins), much better than stultifying head-to-toe pink!
She is so cute! What a little lady!
Holy cow! Already???? Time passes! She's adorable as ever though!!
Can't believe it's been a whole year since the Tangerine graced the world with her presence. She is such a sweetheart. Love those curls (& shoes!).
Thanks for having such an awesome blog....it has been a joy to be a reader!!
That little girl is gorgeous!
Happy Birthday little Tangerine!
She is quite possible the most wonderful little beautiful baby out there.
She is such a beautiful child! I can't believe it's been a year! Goodness me. Happy birthday, Tessa!
She is lucky to have a big brother that loves her as much as LB does. :)
Happy Birthday Tessa!!! Sounds like a great first birthday celebration for your little family.
And Ryan, you have great taste. I may have to hire you as a personal shopper for my kids, although my Mum may be mad at losing her job. Like you, we have no cool kids clothing around here - Tennessee - so my Mum buys 90% of their clothes in London.
Happy Birthday Tessa!
She is so pretty! You have done a wonderful job!
What a cutie-patootie. I love her amazing expressions. She is beond adorable. One of my favorite baby faces of all time.
Sounds like a perfect birthday to me. She is so darn cute! I agree, the whold blue and pink theme are yuk. It's hard not to spend a ton of money on the kids, especially when you find totally cute stuff. Those shoes are awesome!
Happy Birthday Tessa :)
Happy 1st Birthday Tessa!

Tessa is the most beautiful little girl I have ever seen, shes adorable! Happy Birthday Tessa!! x
She is fabulous. I'm so glad LB has a playmate now, and that Tessa is rockin' good shoes from the get-go.
She looks strong, dewy and full of sprite. Love it.
Happy birthday to Tessa and GOOD JOB to mom, dad and LB!!!
Happy Birthday to Tessa, it has been great to see her growing up vicariously, and even more poignant now that I have a three month old, Hazel. You remind me to enjoy her as much as I can every day, because soon she won't be my Lil' Baby anymore, she'll be a big stomping toddler!
PS. No fair that you got to miss out on all the bodily fluids, surely being covered in baby poo is a rite of passage?
how to add to the fawning??
she's a beautiful young lady. all grown up. what a sweet sweet face (and no puke poop or pee THAT is something to celebrate!!)
congrats on making a gorgeous girl.
seriously!
Thanks for sharing. Her eyes have stayed blue! so pretty.
Happy Birthday Tessa!!
Happy birthday, Tessa!

so precious. happy first year to your little tessa!
Happy Happy Happy Birthday Tessa Tangerine.
Gosh she is so cute!
Congratulations! And her shoes are super! (can totally relate to your aversion when it comes to pink girl uniforms... Happy for us there's much more variation here in the Netherlands!)
All I can say is I want those shoes and there is NO WAY that Tessa beauty of yours is ONE YEAR OLD.
Simply can not be.
:-)
Happy Birthday to Tangerine Tessa.
Happy Birthday, Tessa!!
I love it that Daddy was so stinkin' excited to go on a shopping spree! I picture you like my husband even more now....very metro-sexual! haha
Happy belated birthday, Tessa and happy birthing day to Cole.

Love the shoes! Love the dress! Love that toothy little smile! Happy birthday, Tessa!
So this means I've been reading your blog for well over a year now...I started checking you out (yeah. that didn't sound so great) when your wife was pregnant! That went by so quickly!
Dear Ryan and Family,
I've been a lurker on this site for about a year, and watched your family blossom. It's been a real online treat. Just showing some luv from The OC. My husband is a fan, and mentioned your site in an article our local paper ran. They provided a link - so if you see more traffic from the left coast lately, now you know. :-)

she is the most beautiful baby girl... and always has the cutest outfits!
you'll have to catch us up on how the cloth diapers are going, now that she's eating solid foods. I'm curious to know if it's harder (and grosser) now.
"...man that must have had bowling ball sized testicles"
Dying laughing at that visual!
What a cutie she is! Love the shoes, by the way.
She's just full of light and love! Happy Day, Tessa!
