Do What You Love - episode two: Cole

**This is the second in a series of posts that I will be featuring here on Monday mornings that I made for the Gap, you can read HERE for more info about how this series came to be, and the finer details of what it's all about. In short: This is the first in a new series that will be featuring women who Do What They Love for a living. Women who are living their lives on their own terms, and finding success.

One of the reasons I fell in love so very quickly with Cole after just meeting her was how infectious her spirit was, she had this spring in her joints that kind of spun her around when she walked like kart wheels and sunshine-- it had a lot to do with the fact that she was so excited about her work life. She had been busting her butt at hair school, but she also had gotten herself an apprenticeship at the Salon she had set her sights on. She had that ability to picture her dreams, and then chase them down and make them real. She loves the people she works with, and the people she works for, and the way they handle their ongoing education for their stylists. She was just flat out excited about life, she loved becoming a stylist. When we first were married, we were both in that awkward position of not making any money. We were not earners. She was an apprentice, and I was just starting out trying to really pursue photography for the first time in my life, we decided we would just gut it out, neither one of us willing to throw it in and just find jobs that would pay the bills. I could never imagine asking her to quit, and she has always given me the same courtesy, even when we were at our lowest.

She lasted through her apprenticeship, and a maternity leave, and eventually earned her own chair, and has now steadily been building her clientele up ever since, and it's growing fast. We made it through the hard part together. In all of Cole's persistence to get to this point, I think she surprised herself when she got there. What I found interesting and have witnessed her go through was this incredible transformation and realization process she had in the beginning of her styling career. All of the sudden she was nervous to go to work, she was overwhelmed when she would return home. Not because of the hours, but because she had a bigger realization, I asked Cole to talk about those moments for this series: "There had been so much focus on developing the technical and creative skills involved, that I forgot about how heavy the emotional workload could be. Being a stylist you deal with so much emotion. I have no idea what's going on in my clients lives outside of the salon, if their having a good or bad day, if things are tough for them. What I do for them in the chair can make them feel better, or it could make them feel worse emotionally if they hate how they look... bottom line is that they come to me and they need to feel great about how they look when they leave. So every cut I made became this epic decision. The way I shape someones cut, or bring out their face, or give them some security, all of that responsibility hit me all at once, and it took some getting used to. Ultimately this emotional impact and connection to people is what had drawn me into wanting to become a stylist in the first place, so this was a great reminder at the end of a heavy technical process of what I love about my job. What makes it so meaningful to me. It's why I do what I do. It's scary sometimes. I love that."

All the Love in the Universe ~ Me

P.S. The girl in the video that is getting her hair done by Cole, is our friend Maureen. She was our matchmaker. Maureen took it upon herself to spill the beans about all of my carrying on about how gorgeous and awesome I thought Cole was. I was at a point in my life where I had no intention of pursuing any kind of relationship and was going to keep all of my infatuation with Cole to myself. Luckily for me, for us, Maureen took Cole aside and sold me out. That little nudge is all it took. Thanks Maureen.

Love, love, love this series. Cole's infectiously energy shows so much that I feel like dancing in my office. :)

Violent Delights October 18, 2010 8:45 AM

Oh my goodness, I want to get my hair cut there! I live on the wrong side of the Atlantic Ocean though. Damn. Nice to see Trish and Peter in there too.

Anonymous October 18, 2010 9:10 AM

really impressed with the bicycle shots. how were you able to capture those?

The Panic Room October 18, 2010 9:14 AM

@ Anono- A pickup truck, some bungee chords, and the merlin. Keeping focus was the battle. Cannot adjust when it is on the Merlin, so you have to keep your distances accurate once you are locked in. It was really fun to shoot.

My Bottle's Up! October 18, 2010 9:14 AM

i LOVE this series so much. after watching cole dance around in the post you wrote about your photo equipment, i was hoping you would have her in this series. she's so playful.

and of course reading your words to describe her infectious joy is such a treat.

THANK YOU!

The Panic Room October 18, 2010 9:20 AM

@My Bottles Up- Oh geez. I should do an outtake reel of Cole, she goofs around so much during stuff like this. It must be how she loosens up. Like an hour of joking for 10 or 15 seconds of seriousness. So funny.

samantha. October 18, 2010 9:37 AM

This is such a cute series, and I love how you choose your wife as inspiration every step of the way. It is so lovely to have someone that continues to inspire you and who you can marvel at with each passing day. Love it :) I am glad you are both following your dreams!

Juanita October 18, 2010 9:44 AM

Nice going

miss james October 18, 2010 9:45 AM

i love this ryan! i want to be apart of it somehow. let me know if there's a way. either doing what i love or something else. i think it's really great and cole looks beautiful as usual.

sweetsalty kate October 18, 2010 9:47 AM

Agggh I love this. So fantastic, both of you.

jaclyn wahlquist October 18, 2010 9:57 AM

Aw come on!!! This is so great. Just when I was reading about Cole's hardship with learning to balance the emotional work with the other work, I'm thinking, cool, she struggles. She is real. Then I see her biking with a body that seems unlikely to have given birth to two children. What's going on?! I want a series about that. My Daphne is two months younger than your Tangerine, I look like a Mom, not a hottie...what gives!?!?

Aside from being shallow, I'm very happy for you both and impressed with this series.

lindsay michele October 18, 2010 10:08 AM

I love having a voice to put with Cole after reading about her so often.

Johanna October 18, 2010 10:08 AM

I love this film series of yours. Can't wait to see more! Cole is so cute and her energy is infectious.

bex October 18, 2010 10:17 AM

I loved this video! Your wife is beautiful!

Soph October 18, 2010 10:40 AM

I am blown away! This series is fantastic, and Cole looks gorgeous.

Thank you for not only inspiring us to do what we love, for for also inspiring us to see the best in our spouse. I'm sure your love and support has a lot to do with why Cole is at this point today, and it's a wonderful story to tell.

Can't wait to see the next video! :)

A Marvelous Miss October 18, 2010 10:48 AM

You are so talented! Thank God you didn't give up on your dreams becausey ou really have a gift. Your wife is ADORABLE! I want to be friends with her. :)

Anonymous October 18, 2010 10:58 AM

Not that I didn't like your first video (because I did -- LOVED it, in fact), but I really think the voice-over was a terrific addition to this second video. The combination of a well selected song and expressive videography was somehow more beautiful when listening to Cole talk about what she loves.

I felt more challenged to do what I love when I could hear someone speak so freely about their own passions. Especially after reading how you both had to battle through the low points.

Well done!

Alivia October 18, 2010 11:08 AM

This is so beautifully inspiring. I've been teaching dance, something I've wanted to do forever, and I get the same anxiety Cole was describing. It's like the balance for having a career that you love My & the responsibility you feel can get overwhelming. I've always wanted to pursue cosmetology part-time & this video really kicked me in the butt, motivation-wise. Thanks for sharing! :)

Rachel October 18, 2010 11:43 AM

Cole is sooooo pretty!!!

Sini October 18, 2010 11:59 AM

I love this series! From this video, I can say Cole is amazing stylist. I wish there would be someone in our small village who could cut my hair too :) the bike shots were amazing too.

Alice October 18, 2010 12:12 PM

this series is so much fun! Thanks for sharing. Cole is a doll!

The Panic Room October 18, 2010 12:19 PM

@Anono- The first video of Afton actually does have an audio track of our interview, but I messed it up in the export and am fixing the tracks. It will get posted when it is all fixed up. But yes. The audio, makes a huge difference. I was bummed I couldn't launch with it.

Alyssa October 18, 2010 12:45 PM

love love love. i really can't think of another fitting word other than love.

Dana October 18, 2010 1:16 PM

I love how you captured Cole swishing her feet through the hair on the floor. Hilarious. Excellent addition of the interview this time around. It was great to hear her talk about her craft. By the way, do you want to move to DC so she can cut my hair?

Savvy in San Francisco October 18, 2010 1:47 PM

This series is amazing! Can't wait to see the next one!

Jessica October 18, 2010 2:28 PM

I'm really enjoying watching this series on Monday mornings, and also enjoy your other blog entries. You and Cole seem like such an awesome, down to earth couple. It's nice to read about couples who are very much in love and are sharing that love with their children and the world :)

Amanda October 18, 2010 2:28 PM

This series is so inspiring to me. I've had a dream ever since I was a little girl to work in the publishing industry. And, ever since college graduation (2006), I've worked hard freelancing, editing, and assisting industry professionals WHILE holding down a full time job in marketing, supporting my husband (who has faced some health issues recently), and continuing my personal interest in running. Among other things, of course.

This past summer, I was thrilled to be brought on board as a Literary Agent with a pretty high-profile agency! And for the big payoff, I just got an offer from one of the big publishers in NY for a book that I've been shopping for the past few months. My clients are thrilled ... and so am I. :)

Just thought I'd share my own experience in doing what I love.

Anonymous October 18, 2010 2:55 PM

Awesome video! Does your wife really ride her bike to work? Everyday? I'm so jealous! I don't miss living in Florida, but seeing this video gave me some homesick pangs (weather-wise).

Jhope October 18, 2010 3:02 PM

Beautiful. Adore the series!
Couple things:
1. Think about the "fuck the spinach" post so often. No idea how long ago that was...it stuck w me.

2. Wonder where all the dudes are? Imagine they are reading, and are just shy to comment. I guess I know the feeling. (I'm not a dude tho).

Thanks for all you do! You rock...here we rock out to the album over lunch w our resident 3yo cutie pie. A big compliment, as Radiohead is her go to fix, always!

stephanie mansueto October 18, 2010 3:45 PM

Amazing Ryan. You capture her so well... Of course you do... but still.. thank you for making my friend so happy.

Ange October 18, 2010 4:53 PM

Love this new series.
I want Cole to cut my curly hair!
:-)

mommymae October 18, 2010 5:43 PM

i want her to cut my hair. she's so deliberate about every snip. if i'm ever in orlando, i'll make an appointment. in the meantime, does she know anyone in phoenix?

Christine S. October 18, 2010 7:50 PM

Beautiful lady with an inspiring story.

Anna October 18, 2010 7:56 PM

I love this series. Maureen's hair looks awesome. At one point it looks like Cole is explaining to her how to style her hair. I wish my hairdresser would do that for me! I can never get my hair to look as good as when they do it in the salon.

Steph October 18, 2010 8:36 PM

This is SO inspiring!!! and I love Cole, she is the cutest. I agree, the VO was a great touch.

Samantha and Brandon October 18, 2010 8:51 PM

Hey Ryan! Sweet video. It's so great that Cole could be a model for your GAP project. I was wondering what you use to shoot your footage. Do you use a steady cam setup? Your shots are incredible, creative, and inspiring. Thanks for sharing...

Samantha

Piee October 18, 2010 8:53 PM

I love what you do and I teared up when I read this post, because it made me so happy to see how much you two love and support each other.

April October 18, 2010 9:04 PM

sweet video!!

Leisa October 18, 2010 9:17 PM

Hey Ryan! I am really loving this series. It's been so inspirational. Coles passion for life just shines in everything she does! I also love the way you talk about her. :) Thank you for sharing all of this with us.

Elly October 18, 2010 9:23 PM

Oh goodness, Coles brilliance seriously shines through - she's all kinds of amazing! Also, that shot of her sittin in her chair, she looks super like LB. Love it :)

avocadoandlemon October 18, 2010 9:43 PM

Your wife is wonderful! But I'm sure you know that already :)

I can already tell this series is going to be great. I'm trying to do what I love, and it's so inspiring to see other women following that path too. Thank you for sharing this series!

Karen October 18, 2010 10:11 PM

Hi, Ryan,

I'm Steve's sister... I was just was wondering... are Cole's parents' names Tim and Reenie? My sisters and I used to babysit a little girl named Nicole but, we called her Coley. She lived in Bradenton, Florida then.
Thanks.

Karen

Kaycee October 18, 2010 11:02 PM

Wow. WOW. I love and adore this! What a ridiculously awesome idea for an ad series!! I am so glad they told you to run with it and I hope tons of people see it! As always I am SO impressed by your work and your creativity.

Amanda October 19, 2010 2:21 AM

In the bicycle portion of the video you can really see how much LB takes after her. I am also dying to know what her necklace actually is. Every picture or video has me trying to figure it out.

Nora October 19, 2010 8:44 AM

I haven't been reading your blog for too long, but I had to comment. I love being able to see your wife through your eyes, your perception of her is amazing. And you are really able to capture and project an image of her through your lens. She seems amazing...her presence is just infectious.

That aside, the haircut she gave your friend is stunning. I can't believe how beautiful she looked when it was all finished. Amazing.

Elisabeth N. Smith October 19, 2010 9:53 AM

I LOVE this series! I feel like such a dork to say that I find myself in tears at the end of each video. It is so empowering and inspiring to watch these women that have found their place and what they love. At 28 years old I fell like I am just starting my journey to do what I love. When I become independetly wealthy I will fly you to Indiana to make my movie :)

Marie-Ève October 19, 2010 9:58 AM

Wonderful post! I love this series. I'd love it if Cole could be my stylish, but flying to get my hair done might be a tad overkill unfortunately.

She looks so much like the LB in one of the pictures, it's uncannily beautiful.

two 'lil weeds Mama October 19, 2010 10:12 AM

love your videos & this series! wasn't that hard for cole to stay so serious watching you in the pickup truck?

cole is gorgeous. its awesome you two stuck out the harder parts to 'do what you love'; very inspiring. nice to have been reading along since before tessa and see how far you both have come with your work passions.

Kim October 19, 2010 11:03 AM

Man, I wish I could get my hair cut by her too! Too bad I live in Miami...

Karen/Chookooloonks October 19, 2010 12:10 PM

AMAZING video, Ryan. I love that every time I visit your site, I leave inspired.

Beautiful job.

Cole is so beautiful. You two are so fortunate to have found each other. I love this new project, I can't wait to see the next one!

GIRL'S GONE CHILD October 19, 2010 4:10 PM

This is GENIUS. You're my hero.

miette October 19, 2010 5:04 PM

This is beautifully done-- I simultaneously can't wait for, and dread, the day you feature yourself in this series, if only because balancing a camera on a string with an anvil as counterweight or somesuch sounds potentially dangerous

Rebeka October 19, 2010 5:38 PM

Ryan, we all want to know how you and Cole met and married in 5 months! We love the end to your love story, but please tell us the begininng.

Diva Las Vegas October 19, 2010 11:42 PM

Cole is absolutely adorable! I love this series and I love your videos - you inspire me to keep video documentation of my family, in a creative and fun way. Thanks for letting us peek into your lives and always in such a beautiful and moving way. I actually mention your blog and your videos in my latest post on my blog with a video montage I made of my son:

I'm breathless.

I am loving this "Do what you love series." Cole is so stinking cute and I love the bike scenes!

Thanks Ryan for keeping it real.

Anonymous October 20, 2010 2:24 PM

I am addicted to your Blog...I love it like chocolate and your infectious joy for life and its natural quirks makes me now appreciate the small perks in my life as the BIGGEST gifts. Thank you for following your passions!

Mama Cas October 20, 2010 2:30 PM

That second photo looks sooooo much like LB!! Lovely pictures.

Josephine October 20, 2010 6:03 PM

Ryan, it's so very obvious that you love what YOU do ;-) Your work just keeps getting better!

I just love what Cole did to Maureen's hair, the finished product is stunning! And it is so good to put a voice to a name – it's delightful to see Cole in action.

I can't wait to see what's coming next.

Bea October 21, 2010 2:57 AM

You and Cole are so inspiring :) I love this and one day I want to find a job that makes me feel as happy and fulfilled.

It would be pretty cool if you could somehow do one of these videos on Elizabeth of Delightfully Tacky! Her across the country RV trip is inspiring too.

Keep up the amazing work!

Really love this series. Doing what you love is crucial to maintaining sanity (in my opinion). I've settled on 3 different career choices before finally finding my niche. <3

You never, ever cease to amaze me!!! Thanks for doing all that you do!

Amy October 21, 2010 1:30 PM

Is it possible for you to let me know what glasses Cole is wearing? Sorry for the triviality, but I love them! Thanks.

Simply Cintia October 21, 2010 2:50 PM

it was awesome to hear her voice. thanks for sharing!!!

xanthe October 21, 2010 3:24 PM

this series is becoming awesome, you are clearly "doing what you love" and these films ooze that... can't wait to see the next one. (a lurker for a while, finally saying hi!) x.

Toni Brockliss October 21, 2010 4:58 PM

I love this series Ryan. It's realy empowering.
With the birth photos and videos and now these, you really understand what it is to be a lady. It comes across. You like women.
You know when someone is just filming somebody and going through the motions. You have a knack for capturing a females insides.
I don't know if I have explained it right, but I hope you get what I am rambling on about.
I watched Cole's video 4 times with my daughter on my lap and she was saying "again mum"...It's inspiring my 3 year old too.
Thank you.
PS - Cole you are so beautiful and you gave your friend an amazing haircut. Her eyes and cheeks looked gorgeous.

Agata October 22, 2010 3:39 AM

Whoo, just got around to watching this one. Lurve it of course. I really want to cut my hair now. Hair cut is definitely a direct vein into how I feel. Growing it out makes me feel like a wreck. Maybe a trim...
