Two and a Half Minutes with Tessa - episode seven

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I figured since we were doing these as weekly episodes we might as well have a Thanksgiving special...

To celebrate the "feast" aspect of Thanksgiving, I thought it would be interesting/hilarious to present Tessa with her own pile of food and see what she did with it all. This was the first time she was given a piece of corn like this. So she pretty much worked on gnawing the corn off the cob for a good 30 minutes until we had to take it away so she would eat other things. She never touched the hen, and while watching this, it looks like she actually shutters with disgust when she touches the flap of chicken skin hanging off the breast.

Cole and I were up till the early AM trying to figure out what these holidays are supposed to mean for us, and why they are so important to carry out and participate in. Even if you are disgusted by the notion of our fictional American history being played out as a big holiday where we pretend pilgrims and indians were good buddies, and you make the choice to ignore that side of this holiday, the idea of a day of thanks where families come together and feast on food a plenty to show their love and fondness should be an easy thing to accomplish on its own-- but somehow it becomes more complicated every year. While I am building my own family and creating our own traditions, I am torn between making us an island, and trying to please everyone. Going into today it was all brave island talk, and we were happy. By 2 AM I am sick with guilt and trying to figure out how to see everyone today. It shouldn't be like this. It should be one great big gigantic table and open invitations to your entire tree on both sides, and whoever shows up has the feast and the laughs, and all of the differences and hang ups are shelved for a meal. So I guess I am going to have to figure out how to make this great big gigantic table.

Feast your little hearts out today people...

She is adorable! :) Happy Thanksgiving for your family. Of course I don't celebrate Thanksgiving as I'm finnish, but still I would like to experience that as I'm curious of other cultures and traditions.

I love the way she "OOOOHHHHH!!"ed at the beginning when you first present her with her feast! She is a doll! My 2 year old son Silas enjoys watching Tessa for 2 minutes every week....and he is mad that she is not eating her carrots! lol. Corn on the cob is a favorite at our house for dinner....keeps them occupied! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your cute little familia!! And don't worry about pleasing everyone...we do leftovers with the in-laws on Friday and that works for our family.

Wow, does that resonate with me. We do the same thing every year. How to spend the holiday? How to avoid the stuff we don't want to do, only to feel like we either missed the holiday totally if we go island or feel overdrawn and slightly mad about the huge holiday at one family or other. I really think it should be about the kids....maybe when they all can talk we'll ask them what they want to do and then do precisely that!

We just bought a big gigantic table at ikea yesterday night. It's called the APPLARO and there's more in stock, if that helps ;)

Happy Thanksgiving

YES. That's exactly what it should be. Tessa eating the corn melted me! Happy Thanks-Day!

corn on the cob... classic fun and a great way to keep little hands mouths tongues (I love how she keeps licking it!) busy. Jude's been enjoying his since the summer and it never gets old.

So cute! I gotta give the corn a try with my little dude! Tessa has such good table manners. Wow! Impressive. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

dude, how much do i agree?
ONE big table. no hang-ups, just solid meal-time with good people.
as every holiday should be.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING (even though i'm canadian, and we've since passed this holiday. sigh. i want more stuffing!)
have fun!

You shouldn't feel bad for doing what you guys want to do, and they shouldn't feel bad if you do what you want to do. Heck, they probably don't mind, maybe they like their island too? Or you could do the flip-flop thing, like do Thanksgiving with one family, Christmas with the other and switch it every year. I'm sure your family doesn't think badly of you for doing your own thing, though. I think it's nice a gesture to call them and say Happy Thanksgiving or something though :D

Long time reader, first time poster. I just wanted to say that I had a little smile on my face for the entire video. Tessa just looked so excited to have that corn on the cob! She is too cute. :) Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one.

All too true for me as well (with the family decisions). It's even more complicated now with my 14 month old daughter in the picture. The island versus please everyone decision is horrible to go through every year and I wish I had some advice ;). Nice to know we're not alone. I'd love to get through a year not being depressed at the holidays ;)...

Tessa is a doll. Just precious. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ryan,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I've been so lucky growing up, Thanksgiving is my families big holiday. My parents host every year and everybody comes here. It's completely mellow and everybody has a great time. Last night my parents hosted 45 (!!!) members of our family, friends and 6 marines that couldn't go home for the holidays.

As my dad says every year, it's his favorite holiday. It's the one time of the year that nearly everybody we love can be in the same room and share a great meal just because we want to. There is no expectation of gifts or religion that takes over. It's simply a nice day to share with your loved ones.

I hope you and Cole have fun making your own traditions.

Hi, I love reading your posts because it makes me feel like I am not alone. We ended up going out to eat and the few people left in our family didn't even call. We have 4 children and our youngest is two. I had to let the "others" go this year. It was a big release for me. We put up our tree, decorated, I took family pictures (all planned out and so much fun!) We bonded with each other. It was one of the best Thanksgiving's I have ever had!
