Staying Up With the Moon, So You Didn't Have To.

I had a fire pit, and a bottle of wine, and a really terrible zoom lens for my Nikon (that I think I have used once before), and so it seemed like it was the right thing to do at the end of my flu/cold to sit outside in the cold night air, bring in the new winter, and stare at the moon being a creep from 1-5 AM. Yes. Last night was the big lunar eclipse, and in Florida it was clear and cold (for FL) and not a cloud in the sky. It really was worth staying up. I was surprised at how much fun I had sitting out in my backyard by myself trying to figure out how to take moon pictures. This was the best I could do with what I had, but I wanted to put it up before I crashed for anyone that did not get the chance to see it last night. I'm pretty tired now. So this post doesn't have much sparkle! Where's the pizazz?! Time to sneak in a nap before the house wakes up.

Happy First Day of Winter.

That is gorgeous!!! Well done Ryan (even with your terrible zoom lense)!!

QoB December 21, 2010 6:41 AM

First day of winter??
Not where I am:)

Thanks for those photos. It's been snowing here so the cloud cover meant nothing at all was visible: great to see what was happening above all the snowclouds.

sweetsalty kate December 21, 2010 6:46 AM

This is spectacular. :)

ajm December 21, 2010 6:51 AM

Beautiful! Now if anyone asks if I stayed up for the eclipse, I can tell them honestly, "I have people do that for me."

Stephanie Long December 21, 2010 6:53 AM

Thank you so much for this! I live in Japan and we didn't get any of this awesomeness. So glad you were able to capture and share. Domo Arrigato!

Scary Mommy December 21, 2010 6:58 AM

Wow. That is amazing. And so much better than sitting outside myself.

Julia Gail December 21, 2010 7:57 AM

Incredible!! I hear it was pretty cloudy up here in PA, but I was already long in bed--a day in the office does not wait for lunar eclipses : (

Thanks so much for sharing, really wish I could have seen it in person.

logan December 21, 2010 8:03 AM

lindsey kaye December 21, 2010 8:21 AM

Beautiful!
My husband stayed up late/repeatedly woke up to see the progress and got me out of bed around 3AM to see it at the perfect time.
We even saw shooting stars while we were huddled in our driveway.

And Kathleen December 21, 2010 8:26 AM

Thank you, thank you! This is amazing.

I have to say the picture of the many stages of the moon is beyond awesome. My 7-yeat-old wanted to stay up and see it. But she had school today. I think I'll show her this picture. Maybe it won't be seeing it for herself, but it's the next best thing!

hannahschuback@gmail.com December 21, 2010 9:00 AM

Oh. My. God.
I'm in Australia where it is a lovely full moon this evening but this sh*ts all over what I'm looking at!! Wow! Awesome photos bucko.

AWESOME JOB! And thanks for sharing these. We missed it, being completely exhausted after taking care of a sick six year old for the last four days, so thanks for letting me cheat and claim to be a part of it.

Betty December 21, 2010 10:22 AM

It was too cloudy here for us to see it. I was so upset because I really wanted to witness it! I'm so glad you stayed up and was able to capture these amazing photos! Get some sleep now!

TMCPhoto December 21, 2010 11:46 AM

Thank you. we had heavy cloud cover last night so we didn't even get a hint (unless the you count the cloud covered sky being as dark as a new moon night a hint) of the eclipse.

Enjoy your nap!

So cool!Thanks for staying up!

Dove December 21, 2010 12:28 PM

J. December 21, 2010 12:50 PM

Amazing photos... I didn't have my camera, so I'm happy to see that you documented the eclipse. (As if you wouldn't have!)
I didn't have a bottle of wine, but the boyfriend started us a fire and surprised me with the ingredients for smores. Helluva way to welcome winter :)

Anonymous December 21, 2010 12:51 PM

Your pictures are awesome. They rock- love the compilation one. It was cloudy here in the Pacific North West, so we only saw glimpses.

thanks,

E

Emily December 21, 2010 9:38 PM

What do you mean "best you could do" like the photos are going to be all blurry and terrible? Those are awesome, especially the series where you can see the progression of the shadow! Really cool! As a science teacher I give them my 100% approval!

Sini December 22, 2010 3:31 AM

AMAZING! I wanted to see this too, but we are in the area (France) that we could have seen just half of the eclipse and it was rainy and cloudy morning.

B. Inspired. December 22, 2010 8:17 AM

Kim December 23, 2010 6:06 AM

You took those pictures for me! The kids and I had a day of travel ahead of us, so we couldn't stay up to watch the moon. Thank you for these pictures and especially how you have presented them. Soon as my kids get back from visiting their dad we're going to have a little visual science lesson on the lunar eclipse with your awesome photos.

Kim :)
