Her First Big Art Show

I was in front of a computer editing yesterday from early afternoon till about 4AM, so I fell asleep pretty grouchy and disconnected to everyone. This morning I was amazed at how quickly I could cheer up seeing the sun pour into the kids playroom and all of Tessa's artwork that was still hanging on a line to dry. Tessa and Cole had their first big painting party last night while I was working. Apparently Cole plopped Tessa in her high chair, and broke out every paint, and glitter glue stick, and crayon we had in the house-- and just let her go to town. When I saw her to say goodnight she had painted her entire mouth red and had a glitter handprint on her forehead before she hit the tub. It was really sweet, and warmed up this old grouch today to see that Tessa was obviously very proud of her collection, she gets excited when we talk about her work. We never hang out in this room in the morning, but today, it seemed like we all got pulled into it by Tessa's new creations now that it was full of color and light, and Tessa's energy she poured onto paper. She really knows how to tie a room together.

Tessa's first art show

**sidenote- That dog loves the camera, anytime I go to take a picture she will walk into frame and lay down. It's pretty annoying as cute as it looks in this picture.

Love it! It's such a cute thing to do and I love that Tessa's proud of her creations :) Also, you'll explain the mystery dog at some point, right??

I love this. Love that you two know how to tag team and give your kids the awesome intense moments of mess and creativity kids need...and I love your faithful documentation of the moments. It's why I keep reading (though I rarely ever comment...)

ditto shelly - who's the new super-cute pup?!
I think you used to have a dog (a pug?) who had to go because of LB's allergies (didn't the dog eat poop??)
The art from Tessa is lovely :)

I LOVE those tiger pj pants, too cute!

OK, reading this made me immediately want a little girl to make art with! One thing I remember is my mom used to ask me to draw her specific things...like "I would really like a picture of a tree!" It may not have turned out anything like a tree, but it was always great presenting her with what she asked like I had been comissioned.

We framed the first two paintings my daughter ever did (they look very similar to Tessa's) and six years later, they're still hanging over our bed.
You should definitely showcase these. They're brilliant!

i'm with shelly. i'm pretty observant… but i've never noticed a dog. or read about your dog. and still the dog is nameless. it's scruffily adorable. and tessa… yikes… she is beautiful. can't wait for cole's blog!
artwork is the best. and what a fantastic way to show it off!

I can't remember who said it but there's a quote I read once that said that everyone is an artist when they are young and the trick is learning not to loose it. I think kid's artwork should be celebrated because they are all such little artists and it's not till grown ups start telling them that their art isn't good that they stop. It's soooooo good! It may be silly but we have sketches our nephew drew on our fridge and I refuse to take them down because I want him to know that we think they're fantastic.

My husband loves nature photography and complains that the dog ruins every photo with his nose poking in to say "what are you taking a picture of, Dad?" That's what dogs do - it is pretty annoying but they are a lot of fun.

Erin March 25, 2011 10:45 AM

beautiful! it makes me happy to see parents allowing their kids' inner artist come to life, mess and all. this is the way it should be for everyone, even adults!! fun stuff!

Jessica March 25, 2011 11:09 AM

The artwork is beautiful, but my question is about that dog.

That dog? Does that dog have a name? I noticed him in the pic with LB and Cole working on the iPad and laptop, and now again..

Are yall dog sitting or does he reside with you guys?

Jen March 25, 2011 11:11 AM

Is the dog full or partial Jack Russell Terrier? We have a JRT, and he does the exact same thing when the camera is out. It's like he must strike a pose!

Love the art on display!

Awesome use of that room. It really gets the best light. Chalkboard wall yet?

Hey! Could you please tell us where you got that awesome green rug? Thanks!

logan March 25, 2011 11:38 AM

Love it! and I love that rug!

Tessa, your artwork is awesome!

Maggie May March 25, 2011 11:51 AM

a great idea to hang it like a clothesline. we have an art wall in our kitchen that is just what is sounds like, and it always cheers me up :)

SZ March 25, 2011 12:14 PM

post about the cute dog, please =P

Faryl Loew March 25, 2011 1:36 PM

i did a while photo shoot yesterday with my dog using a mamiya645(:

...yes I was that bored.

Renee March 25, 2011 2:04 PM

I think this is my favorite photo of Cole and Tessa - just perfect!!

P.S. I noticed the dog in your photo on Cole's post and assumed it was someone's dog you were watching since you had never mentioned it. I agree with the others, you must explain the dog at some point (and tell us what its name is... you didn't name it after the green monster, did you?)

Connie S March 25, 2011 4:05 PM

Great shot. What a wonderful playroom you've got there: I like that the rug has this "fluffy green grass" thing going for it...it's so whimsical.

You get fantastic sunlight in your home.

Roxy March 25, 2011 4:18 PM

where did the dog come from?

Natalee March 25, 2011 4:50 PM

YOU HAVE A DOG!?!

Natalee March 25, 2011 4:51 PM

WHAAAAAAAAAT -YOU GUYS HAVE A DOG!? since when?

nikaela marie March 25, 2011 6:11 PM

this photo is so good! i love tessa's work. xx o

ps. cole's answers were the greatest!! can't wait for the next batch.

dietplaid March 25, 2011 9:49 PM

I think one of the best things about kids is the art. They just have an incredible ability to create fluidly. I totally dig that it's all hung up on a wire like that. I think I should rig something up to hang my watercolors from.

Also, I don't know if I commented before, but Cole's answers were grrrrrreat! *cue Tony the tiger*

Josefina March 25, 2011 11:12 PM

Such a cute picture. Tessa is a natural artist! The dog looks adorable staring at both Cole and Tessa.

Anna March 26, 2011 4:13 AM

I love this picture a lot.

Hundewanderer March 27, 2011 6:38 PM

You have a dog?

I have a camera crazy dog too, she poses for me when she see's the camera :)

Laura March 28, 2011 11:10 AM

Yes, in this case, it's definitely the artwork and not the rug that ties the room together.

The Panic Room March 28, 2011 11:13 AM

@ Laura- Did you just make fun of our rug?!

elizabeth March 29, 2011 4:54 PM

You guys are amazing! i love your blog, especially your two children!
