Grow

She fills her hands with the smell of herbs and stands and sniffs at them and grins. She dumps her water pail around the tops of the flowers while she watches Cole take care of this little patch of garden in the mornings, and again before dinner-- she is learning. This is the best thing we can do for the kids. Get them growing. Watch the earth magic at work in these marvelous little examples. She pulls strawberries off the plants and feasts, and has a close eye on the big cluster of blueberries hinting at turning ripe. I feel good knowing that at least she knows strawberries don't just come from a plastic container. Small steps. Keep her hands in the dirt and let it get under her skin, let her make the connection. At the end she will know from experience that you have to love and respect your little patch of dirt to get the flowers blooming and the food to ripen, and the hope here, is that same love and respect will be carried over to the way she cares about the rest of the earth. It's important to us that one of the things that this little girl will be able to say to people as she gets older is: "I can grow food."

Great shots. There is nothing that can match food from a home garden. We've been gardening with our 7 year old for the last few years and it's been a great experience. It never ceases to amaze him (or us).

@writtendad- Nothing?! Not even pizza? I guess you're right on this one.

this is awesome! I'm moving to new digs, and we have a small yard, but a HUGE front porch. I want to get my Dubs involved with gardening, and doing some tub-planting is GENIUS! Thanks for the idea!

This makes me want a garden. She looks so much like you in that first shot.

You write so eloquently about the things you work to teach the kids. It's inspiring - one day I plan to garden with my future kids as well.

Man, when I was little my parents had a garden with strawberries. I don't think I really understood it, because I wanted to pick them everyday, and my mother would go to the grocery store and purchase strawberries every night, and lay them among the leaves for me to pick the next day. What a mom.

Happy Earth Day!

The best part is: it's a magic that never gets old. Every spring, the garlic shoots up, or the white berries start to take shape, and it never, ever fails to amaze. Good for you for letting them have this gift while they're young. (Oh god, I have to go wash the dirty hippie out of my mouth)

When we finally get a house will you and Cole come help me get a garden set up? I tried last year but when we moved everything died and since we are talking of moving again I don't want to start something only to have it all die. I do have two pots of basil growing in my kitchen windowsill which is kind of a big deal.

It's an awesome thing you can do for your kids! I grew up "slow food" and didn't know it til I went off to college and...had a frozen green bean for the first time in my life. Now our rag tag church is starting an urban garden, and I've somehow ended up taking the lead, because I'm the only one who grew up in a garden.

The love of gardening and good food is a wonderful gift to give to a child. People have a greater respect for food (and don't waste it) when they know all of the effort that went into growing it. My love of gardening came from my grandpa. I've had a large veggie garden for 3 years now but, by no means, claim to know what I'm doing. LOL. Every year a few new challenges arise.

When I was a little girl, my dad grew strawberries in containers on our deck and when they were ripe, we would go out and pick some every morning for him to cut up on my cereal.
One of my most cherished childhood memories.
Good job, Marshalls. Good job.

I couldn't agree more. We've been gardening with our daughter (a few weeks younger than Tessa) and it's such an incredible joy to see her involved in the process. I was waxing on about it one time recently and my husband was like, Sarah, if you keep this up, you're going to raise an entire household of environmentalist hippie freaks.

Okay, I said. That sounds like a success to me.

When I first opened this post I thought that first picture was of Cole before I gave it a second glance. Your little girl is growing up so fast, and looks an awful lot like your lovely wife :)

This is totally unrelated, but...

My toddler and I LOVE the Do Fun Stuff album! I've had it for a while, but lately it's been on constant rotation in the car and makes the perfect sing-along album.

Great work.

Hi, Ryan. I came across this photographer and thought of you. I don't know if you're still shooting any birth stories, but I thought you'd like some of these: http://www.nielsensonline.com/#/bgal/
