Bikes & Boots

These particular boots were a gift from Mr Jason Hudson when he came to visit us before our trip to Alt Summit.

I have been watching all these photo of the day challenges unfolding online, and on instagram focusing on daily themes and assignments, and it inspired me a little to try and assign myself a theme to start shooting more again around the house. So I wanted to try and document what everyone is into lately around here. I look back on old photos of me as a child and sometimes catch a glimpse of toys and books in the background and focus in and try and remember all the time I spent playing with that particular toy. I recently saw a slide of me and my sister and there is an old Lone Ranger doll sitting on Silver in the background and I instantly remembered the hours I spent looking through our crazy colored 70's shag rug for his pistol, and never being able to find it. So my Lone Ranger had an empty holster most of his toy career. Sometimes I wish I had more pictures of my stuff I was into. So...I decided I would go ahead and get into the habit of this when I notice a craze moving through the house.

There are currently two obsessions going on in our house, Cole is a full fledged bicycle nut, and Tessa is deeply infatuated with boots-- so much that just yesterday, I watched her try for over 5 minutes, put a pair of boots on over top of the boots she was already wearing. I just hope Tessa ends up with a sister so she can pass down her boot collection to someone. As for Cole and the bikes, I was so thrilled to finally be able to get her dream bike for her. It arrived while we were in Utah attending Alt Summit and when we got home late in the night, she rushed out to the garage and ripped into this gargantuan shipping box, and met her bicycle. She was in love instantly.

P.S. Last week Jason posted our first family photos of us taken and today he posted some more featuring Tessa Tangerine! Please go and enjoy them HERE!

Love this post! Must be a sweet time having two little ladies with their obsessions fulfilled! I can't wait to be reunited with my own bicycle (it's been close to a year)!

I can't even handle the shot of Tessa leaning against the shelf with her feet crossed. She is such a badass!

And that's why I love Christmas morning pictures/videos because I can watch my young self completely lose my shit over the little obsessions I had. Like one year my dad got me a replica of Mr. Bean's teddy bear and you can see me just ECSTATIC while I'm squeezing it.

That bike is incredible. I wish it had arrived earlier, cuz a ride in that thing would've been a) super fun and b) hysterical.

Cute boots.

Boots on top of boots? Tessa's my kind of kid.

I am so insanely jealous of Cole's Madsen... I dream of having that bike by September to bike my kids to Kindergarten in.... And the boot obsession! awesome!

That hide and go seek game sounds terrifying! Haha. I guess I'm with Jason on this one. Though maybe it's a good one to play so my kids won't be as whiny as I am. :)

Lovely pics, as usual. I just wanna know how in the heck your house is always clean! My TT is Tessa's age and she destroys everything.

@Amanda- That bottom picture, just to the left of that is the playroom, and it looks like a Tessa tornado hit it :)

I am so excited for Cole about her bike! I've been following for quite a while and love that she can finally ride the kids around like she wanted--what a thrill it must be for her.

Are those first three shot on film?

The Panic Room January 26, 2012 5:14 PM

@Tim- They are. Fuji100C pack film shot on my Goose. Still my favorite camera for shooting the family.

My wife and I will be looking for back seating for a bycicle just like that! Where did you get that rig? Do you mind posting what it consists of? Thanks a lot and keep up the great posts!

What a fun bike!! If we didn't live on a huge hill, I'd totally be saving up for one of my own!

Hi Ryan, huge fan of your blog and family! Can you tell us the brand of Tessa's boots? My two year old would love these.

Mrs.T January 27, 2012 1:21 PM

Tessa and her collection of boots is amazing! Also, Cole should post a review of her bike soon. I love this bike and would like to hear what she thinks of it now that she owns it/has taken the kids in it.

Katherine January 27, 2012 2:20 PM

great post and photos as always...question...did you have to special order the black bike frame with the blue cargo bucket? thanks!!

coleface January 27, 2012 8:50 PM

@simplyjess check out the Gary fisher cargo bike. It comes with electric assist. Your pedaling charges the motor making every pedal round worth ten pedal rounds. So perfect for hilly places. They seem to be really customizable. They fit the peapod seats that hold children up to 60lbs, as well as oversized pannier bags that will have you toting four large bags full of groceries plus two kids. It was my second choice for sure!

Olivia Mawhinney January 29, 2012 6:02 PM

Ahhh, yes. Tessa is such a good model. She has Cole as her example, how can she not:)

Betsy January 30, 2012 9:14 PM

Whoa - so could the whole family use this bike at once? You pedaling and Cole on the front?

I have been reading for a while... and finally figured that I should say hello. I find your cadence refreshing, your thoughts honest, and your family gorgeous. I see bits of familiarity in all of our differences. I was born an artist and dabble in photography and it's nice to hear from another artist about the back and forth that happens when we create.
thank you for your candor and your hospitality.
