Full Circle
I have made reference a few times around here to a project I was in the midst of that was eating up a ton of my time. A project that took me to New York City a few times last year, and a project that taught me a lot about how much I can do on my own. I was nervous about posting the final result here, because I always get the feeling that people are like... who cares!!! Hurry up and get Cole pregnant again, geez! But Cole knows how much this video means to me, and she said, "you better put that up on your blog and stop worrying about what other people think!" And so I listened.
I don't know if anyone remembers me posting about Guido Palau before... but the story goes, I had the pleasure of hearing him speak at an event, he was a huge inspiration at a critical time in my life, and a year later I found myself making a film about him. My attraction to making the piece and getting to know the man, was that I was fascinated with how stunned he had been by his own rise to the top of his field, and that through it all he stayed grounded and didn't lose himself. He had that thing that I can so identify with, where you're just never quite satisfied with your work, you can always do just a little bit better. I know how much torture that can be...
This piece is my first step into the world of fashion, and I was happy with what I found there. Making this really solidified that I wanted to keep working on moving pictures, and I enjoy the process of telling stories so much. I'm hooked.
Cole and I are off to SLC today and beyond the fabulousness of Alt Summit, I am just so excited to be able to sit around with friends and laugh. Alt can be as non-stop as you want it to be, and my plan is to definitely take it slow and make the most of my time, and also to just enjoy having Cole near me so many days in a row. Who knows, 6 days with no kids, where we can do whatever we want and just be a couple, sounds like a recipe for more children :)

You SHOULD be very proud of your work. I’ll only speak for myself but as someone who follows your blog, I love to see your the finished piece. It’s very inspirational. As I sit in my cubical, staring at my screen wishing I could pick up my camera… You should be proud that you are perusing your creative calling. I can’t imagine the amount of work and sacrifice, be proud and show it off a little :)
Vivi
Ryan - It's really really great. You have such a knack for moving images & editing - the timing, the pacing - the story. Great job, friend. I'm inspired. Big time.
That is brilliant. Beautifully done, so much attention to detail. Really lovely - thank you for sharing. Genuinely can't wait to see more.
wow. all your hard work really paid off. badass!
I've just got to throw this out there -- seeing the movies you've created and the things you've done on your own in film really helped inspire me to change my life path and take up Film school. It's something I've always wanted to do but was too afraid to do it. But in a small part to you, and the amazing things you've made, I'm doing it this April.
Great Job!! Guido will be proud and Redken will love it!
Really admire your work. Have been following the blog for nearly 2 years now and enjoy watching the progress. I always look forward to your video work and really enjoy your editing. What program do you use to edit? What camera did you use to shoot this? Do you have any formal training on video editing or is it just instinct? Sorry for all the questions but I would love to know more about your influences. Great Work!
That was incredible. Be proud, and don't think twice about posting your accomplishments and whatever is meaningful to you. That's what this space is for, right? Not just to please us!
This is absolutely gorgeous. Congrats and please keep sharing!
Do you think you'll have the first Alt Summit-conceived baby? Maybe they'll give you a prize for that or something.
who cares! hurry up and knock up your wifey! haha! Just kidding! Your work is always amazing. I also love seeing your finished projects!
It's beautifully done. I love how he tells his story with this hands, even when he's not "working". It's lovely. You should feel immensely proud.
I love seeing anything you produce. You, who loves producing & working and just pursuing what you love, is the main attraction here. You create the passion, the inspiration for us, your audience to be better artists. Nice work Ryan, enjoy your time with Cole. Lord knows I would love 6 days alone with my hubs.
Ryan- the fast cuts balanced with slow-mo and the slow-mo balanced with the SUPER slow-mo look awesome. Your videos are getting really, really good. I can't wait to see what else is in store for you guys! Super inspiring!
Amazing! That video rocks. You should be proud of the work you do, please post more this kind of things here.
that was absolutely fantastic!!! I LOVED towards the end where the photographer was shooting the models and you had them walking towards the camera and then you'd freeze the frame, then have them continue moving in super slow motion. fantastic work!
Ryan, that video was mesmorizing. It is absolute perfection. I found your blog because of Cole's maternity series, but I would look at anything you posted anytime. Thank you for sharing, Cole was right to push you!
You are awesome!! We love seeing your work!!
Hahaha to your last sentence on your post ;-)
Ryan, as pumped (ha!) as I am for you and Cole to get down to business, I pine for your work just as hard. You being all weird about how we might take it? Guido. You staying grounded even though you're climbing the ladders to the unknown? Guido. You are my version of Guido, and you documenting your success is pushing me that much further to my own. I never want to not see it. You guys are fucking awesome and thank you for the endless inspiration on all life levels. Team Marshall, ftw. <3 Alex
ps. STUNNING. As always. He's going to freak.
Oh man it's so cool. Well done - you're an inspiration !!!
Great video! You have such a talent for knowing how to put your finger on the pulse of the scene-knowing when to keep the tempo up and when to take it slow and let the textures and the candid expression be the main concern.
Who did the music?
Have a great time with Cole-enjoy just being you guys.
silly boy...it's fantastic. have a little more faith in yourself- your journey has been amazing and you've worked hard for all of this so stop sweating the small stuff! :)
wonderful! thanks for sharing your work with us. i enjoyed learning about an industry i know nothing about.
Brilliant!
Beautiful.
You should listen to Cole more often. She's more than just the beauty behind the operation. Nice work!
Amazing. So beautiful. You truly have a gift for this- please keep going!!! :)
This first attempt turned out phenomenal. You've got quite the bit of talent in that little pinky of yours good sir. :) Kudos! Cannot wait to see the amazing doors this opens for you and what you'll be bringing us next.
I've been hanging out at your blog for...a long time, now, and I can't tell you how awesome it is to see the progress in your work and your vision--it gives me hope that, if I apply myself, I can push my work and abilities further too. All that said, this video is awesome. Enjoy your time with Cole!
WOW.
I don't know anything about hair (it's pretty obvious too), but this film sucked me in.
I think you can make a video of someone cutting their toe nails and it would be beautiful.
You are so talented with capturing images, both moving and still, that breathe beauty.
A guy with a cup of coffee is suddenly interesting through your lens.
Well done!
so beautiful!
Congrats! Awesome video. I think you have a great knack for capturing really human details - a smile in profile, a hand around a coffee mug - in your work and I love that. This was really well-done!
This was an absolutely gorgeous video, Ryan! You should be very proud and I'm glad Cole encouraged you to post it. We read your blog, and follow you & Cole on Instagram, Tumblr, etc. We see the snippits of when you're off travelling for work. And it's wonderful to see the finished product. Have a wonderful time at Alt & I look forward to both of your Instagram feeds :)
That was *EXCELLENT*. Really, you are amazing. Nice job.
Bravo - this message goes beyond hair. A beautiful, well thought out piece of work.
Can't wait to see what you dig a bit deeper for next.
brilliant
absolutely stunning & brilliant
Really lovely, I love all your videos (especially the wedding ones-I always cry!). You should know that you are also very inspiring. I am pregnant and would love to create such a beautiful record of this wonderful journey, but 1) I don't have a video camera (nor is one in my budget any time soon) and 2)I don't have the skills. You should be very proud of yourself. :)
Side note that has nothing to do with you--I wish Redken didn't test on animals, otherwise I'd buy!
Awesome! I was planning to get into Alt Summit this year but the busy life has won this time.
There's a new spot on 300 South in between State Street and 200 East called Plum Alley (next to a delicious spot called The Copper Onion), it's Asian fusion goodness!
If you want to get out late night style and do some dancing, Afro Omega is playing at the Urban Lounge on the 20th. They are an amazing reggae jam band. You would never believe that they are local. They are fun and the music is so great, even if you aren't a fan of reggae you will definitely do some dancing! http://www.theurbanloungeslc.com/?p=2561
Check out the Garage at some point. 1199 North Beck Street - Delicious food and drink and they have an awesome Sat/Sun brunch. Go in Saturday or Sunday night and ask for Nate, my boyfriend, let him know we are blogworld friends and he'll take good care of you guys!
SLC has recently opened and reopened The Leonardo and the Natural History Museum of Utah. Both beautiful and the exhibits need to be seen. The Leonardo is right by the Grand America, East of the building you two thought was the Temple. ... :)
And Sundance's 2012 Film Festival New Frontier Exhibit opens up on the 20th. http://www.utahmoca.org/2012-new-frontier/ ...There is a private party happening on the 24th where you can meet the artist and enjoy food, music, and drink. I may be be able to get you guys some tickets if you are free! Shoot me an e-mail: karamea@slugmag.com
ANYWAY. That is my SLC guide for you two this year. Hopefully you can get out and explore!
This is awesome Ryan!! Thank goodness for Cole making you post it...we care about this stuff just as much too!
I am so glad you're hoooked on making moving pictures, because I'm hoooked on watching them.
As a hair nerd, I devoured every second of that! Redken fan here. :)
Guido seems like a very laid back person. Even around all the chaos of fashion week, he's just chillin'. Leaning against the wall like it's no big deal.
I want whatever he's having, thank you.
Wonderful!
Omg this is so good. I hope you get as many jobs like this that you want! I would love to hear more of your bts stories if you ever want to share them with us. You did an incredible job with this!
I like the b/w effects as it gives this video some drama, so nice job. I think there's still a need for b/w images for film and watching something that was originally filmed in black and white and converted in color takes something away for me. Id like to invite you folks to my post on my visit to the farm where the 1985 movie Witness was made that stared Harrison Ford in Lancaster County.
The movie is wonderful. It makes me want to sit in a chair so someone could play with my hair and make it fabulous. Great work :)
that nervous energy is needed to be able to challenge ourselves and create something inspirational. now that it is finished i wonder what you were nervous about- this is an exceptional piece. the fashion industry is lucky to have you ryan, for you highlight their talents through a new window which is your own artistic vision.
Love the rhythm, the pace, the black and white. That's such killer hair too. The blonde braid at the end, and the very last hair in slo mo, wow. I love it.
So interesting that you and Cole are both coming at hair, but from different angles.
it's kick ass ryan! and now I want to go do my hair. i need cole to fix it, it's post-baby-crazy.
ps... i know this is totally random but i really like the font you picked
Love. This. Your work feels like it's an old friend telling you a story.
That is awesome. Seriously.
ryan, this is absolutely fantastic. i love how you've taken your work from stills to moving pictures. the videos are lovely and really tell a story so simply and yet keeps a rich entertainment there. love the text bits in between the scenes too. keep up the good work.
i so wish i were at ALT. enjoy every minute.
I LOVE IT! I got a little emo (pssht, whatever! just a bit!) reading the bit about being surprised by his success, and seeing him say that he never quite thought he could do what he's done. I'm at a point now where I'm throwing myself into my freelance work and building my business, and having said goodbye to my bartending job (and ability to coast along on that alone) last month, I'm freaking out a bit. I was told the other night that I seem like I don't believe in myself and my talent, and that I'm afraid of success. I never really looked at it that way before. Thanks for posting this gorgeous video, Ryan. It's been a pretty incredible three years watching your talent take shape into something so impressive. High five, bud!
Ryan, I LOVE THIS. It's so beautiful and so inspirational -- and so much fun to watch!
I love seeing the family (of any professional I admire) but I really REALLY love seeing your work (and Cole's work) too - maybe even more.
It's all fascinating and wonderful to me! Surely I can't be alone in this...
I'm sure someone else has already posted something like this, but you know what? I do not care about hair in the least. And product? No way, get it away from me. But your video DREW ME IN and made me care for those few wonderful minutes of hairy bliss. Please don't ever start making videos beautifying something truly evil, but continue to use your powers for good!
Oh Ryan, it's just gorgeous. Congrats. I can totally see YOU in it. And I want to get my hair done.
Love it, you did such a great job. Love the tempo, the music, the video and how you incorporated everything. Beautifully done.
Seriously fantastic. You shouldn't be worried what everyone thinks. We all read your blog because we love your family AND your work!
Beautifully done. Lovely details, light and movement.
