An Honest Day's Work

Who says you can't get your two year old to be useful around the house...

All kidding aside, I was surprised how into our yearly backyard orange harvest Tessa was-- last year she had fun picking up all the oranges we pulled out of the tree and would throw down on the ground, she would busily scoot by, scoop them up and place them in the wagon for us. She tried biting into one a few times like an apple when she realized that these little orange balls of delight make the most delicious glass of orange juice you'll ever drink in your life. So Cole sat down with her and showed her how it's done here in Florida. The kid drank as much as we would give her, (I know, I know, bad for enamel, we know), and now it's really sad to see her get disappointed the rest of the year when she drinks orange juice from anywhere other than our backyard. It's just never as good. Ever. Did you ever wonder why? No matter what brand you're buying, and no matter how much the label is screaming 100% natural and fresh squeezed, truth is most of the oranges for juice aren't even coming out of Florida anymore, and once squeezed the juice has been sitting in a tank at a processing plant for sometimes up to a year, where all the flavor has been stripped out of it, and then they add back there own particular crafted "brand flavor." Yuck! And of course none of these beverage companies have to say anything about it because of our super awesome labeling practices here in America. all I know is that when I drink a glass of store bought juice, it never tastes like orange juice. We call it orange drink.

As a kid my parents had about 10 or 12 trees of citrus, and each season we would fill buckets and buckets of oranges and make juice that lasted us months. There were certainly years as I got older where I was like... "Seriously?! We have to go and deal with all these oranges again? And of course now as an adult I look back on those trees and feel so lucky that I got to grow up with them, if only I could shake my bratty teenage self and tell him not to be such a jerk to my parents about helping out. I was seriously the worst. The WORST!

So I am making sure I enjoy all the enthusiasm I am getting out of Tessa about being in the yard with her old man, picking oranges, taking care of the tree, and then the sticky work of juicing all these oranges. She was such a huge help, she really was, and she made me proud. I was ready to start my own grove after this weekend. A new family business. Maybe when she is older we can have a stand or something. Wouldn't that be something!

She picked all the oranges she could reach, and made the funniest little grunt each time.

She said: "I drink it" & then tried to squeeze the juice out with her bare hands

She separated all the bad oranges from the good pile, and we buried them for compost.

Ready for juicing.

She got the hang of it quick, and got herself into a good rhythm.

We fill mason jars so we can give them out to family and friends.

She drank two full glasses as fast as she could until hers eyes were watering.

Oh wow, what great memories to make! Don't worry, in a few years she'll got her own back with cries of, 'do I haaaaave to?' when you suggest helping with the harvest!

Absolutely gorgeous. I saw a video yesterday of a family milking their own cows, providing for themselves and their community. It made me want a tall glass of cold milk.

And now I want some orange juice!

So fun! Our friends live over in Audoban park where everyone's yard is full of grapefruit trees and we always go and walk around and steal bags full and then come back and juice them. It's so delicious! (Especially with a splash of vodka) ;)

sweetney January 30, 2012 9:06 AM

Cutest. Damn. Family. Ever. Love you guys. xo

Kelsey January 30, 2012 9:13 AM

So cute. I wish she could send me some in Virginia. :) She has inspired me to go make my own...

Francine January 30, 2012 9:30 AM

Don't even get me started on Tropicana. I can't even handle that crap. Orange sugar water.

You're more generous than I am! I'd totally keep all the orange juice to myself and not give any away...

Connie January 30, 2012 9:30 AM

Swoon! I LOVE that first photo of her in profile-view using the juicer. It looks like she's hosting her own cooking show.

And when did she become this grown up girl!?!? Wasn't she just born??

You are right, though-to look back at the things you did that were "normal" to you and therefore things you took for granted, only to want to get the chance to return to that. For me, when we lived with my grandmother, she had a huge garden that we'd harvest from, and I wasn't old/wise enough to ask her good questions about it. So, I try and garden now as a way to carry on the legacy, but I wish she was alive to help give me advice.

what a wonderful tradition... i miss the citrus trees we had growing up in san diego. nothing like it.

Did you guys just now juice? I'm about an hour north of you, and our trees were ripe by the beginning of November. I'm jealous if you still have good fruit on hand. We juiced the last of them for Christmas Day.
And until the recent news articles that came out revealing just what kind of crap they were putting into the juice, I had no idea that it wasn't just oranges. I could never figure out why I couldn't handle the store-bought stuff (acid reflux), but could drink fresh squeezed all day with no problems.
And Tessa looks so adorable in those french piggies!

Lindsey January 30, 2012 11:16 AM

I need to be obnoxious and ask what the font from the "Juicing Day" picture is, sorry!
I'm also jealous of your access to fresh, ripe fruit, here in Indiana it's hard to comeby this time of year.

@Lindsey- It's http://www.dafont.com/fff-tusj.font Have fun :)

I completely agree with all your statements about OJ. The first thing I do when I visit my grandmother in FL (after giving her a kiss, of course) is high-tail it to the grove stand for REAL orange juice. It is the nectar of the gods, I tell you.

jacquelyn | lark&linen January 30, 2012 12:12 PM

This is such a sweet tradition for you two! My dad and I used to pick apples from our backyard and make apple pie for the family. I still hold on to those memories!

Roxy January 30, 2012 1:02 PM

Oh this is such a lovely post. Tessa is just precious and looks so into the juicing. Love it.

Also I cannot get over the fact she's wearing a vest and shorts, when I had to put layers and layers of clothes today when I took my dog out for a walk. It was minus 22 degrees Celcius (7.6 Fahrenheit) I want to be in florida!

wonderchris January 30, 2012 1:40 PM

Orange juice is my favorite...what a wonderful post. I would buy Tessa Orange Juice in a heartbeat!!!

Punk Rock Mom January 30, 2012 1:49 PM

I could not agree with you more. I grew up the daughter of a farm worker and we lived literally next to acres and acres of orange orchards. Now my father owns his own citrus management company and lives on his own ranch with orange, lemon and avocado trees. Every time we stay at their house he always makes fresh orange juice and nothing compares. Nothing.

Alice January 30, 2012 2:14 PM

love her braided pigtails!! so cute! I want some orange juice!

Anonymous January 30, 2012 2:18 PM

So sweet! That has my mouth watering, sadly I'm allergic to oranges!

pushpindiaries January 30, 2012 2:40 PM

Oh my gosh. Too much cuteness to handle. Tessa is beautiful and her spunky personality is apparent in these pictures. :)

John-Anthony January 30, 2012 3:03 PM

those were the best photos

redfrizzz January 30, 2012 3:32 PM

I'm moving to Florida soon, and on my last trip down to visit I stopped at the state welcome station where they hand out little cups of orange and grapefruit juice. Coming from the midwest, where it's chilly and sterile, crossing into Florida where it's warm, sunny, and sincerely fresh, that juice literally woke all my senses up again. Looking forward to your strangely warm seasons...

katy. January 30, 2012 3:39 PM

Love this! I just moved to Charlotte last summer from Orlando and I miss the good stuff! I love that you guys are taking her through the process of making fresh juice. These pictures are gorgeous. I love these sort of traditions and plan on instilling a ton when we have little babes of our own.

P.S. I was thrilled when I saw that you're going to be at Blissdom. See you there!

tim coulson January 30, 2012 3:55 PM

Yeah, man. I wanna do this with my kids.

SaRaH January 30, 2012 4:03 PM

yummy
i'll never tried real real florida orange juice...
She has change a lot, lately. She's not a baby girl anymore. You can see a "real" little girl.

Lynet January 30, 2012 5:31 PM

WAAAAAAY too cute!

Nicole January 30, 2012 6:33 PM

Tessa is so adorable! I love that you guys are making such sweet memories together.

Your story of being a teenager, reminded me of my family too! I used to spend every summer with my cousins up in Maine where my uncle was a lobster fisherman. We ate so many lobster during the summer that by August we would beg my Aunt to serve us hot dogs instead! "Lobster agaaaaaaain?! Bummer."

Looking back I realize how crazy that sounded.

Julia January 30, 2012 8:46 PM

I foolishly expect restaurants in SoFla to serve fresh squeezed o.j. That ended when I had talked up a restaurants great juice to my dad only for him to point out our waitress pouring our juice out of a plastic. Yes...fresh squeezed out of a plastic gallon jug.

Corrina January 30, 2012 9:13 PM

Oh this is the cutest thing ever, she's such a sunshine. Love her with her hair braided, look so pretty on her!

Betsy January 30, 2012 9:25 PM

These pictures are torturously gorgeous! I've never had fresh-squeezed OJ!

Twwly January 30, 2012 9:35 PM

My kids don't understand store bought tomato juice, sauce or ketchup. Same kind of thing. Asparagus, strawberries, feta cheese. I remember my son saying "why doesn't this TASTE" at about 4.

I sure wish we could grow citrus in our zone! Or avocado. Jealous!

Hundewanderer January 30, 2012 9:53 PM

So cute! Your Tessa is growing, changing, she's looking more like a little girl and less like a toddler. Growing up in Arizona my neighbor had the BEST pink grapefruit tree. I've never had a grapefruit as good as the ones from my childhood.

Lea January 31, 2012 12:32 AM

This is beautiful!! I love it!! And the last photo of Tessa is the best!! I grew up with orange trees and making fresh oj is one of my fondest childhood memories!

Margie January 31, 2012 10:08 AM

Honestly, Ryan, does your face hurt all the time from how much she makes you grin because my face is sore right now.

la domestique January 31, 2012 10:26 AM

Way too cute...seriously.

onesilentwinter January 31, 2012 11:39 AM

oh my goodness, this is so happy- vitamin c for all!

thebluemuse January 31, 2012 12:45 PM

I've been waffling about whether to put in some citrus trees this year, and you've just convinced me! Love the photos, especially that goofy OJ-loving grin at the end. Thanks for sharing!

We Three Zweigs January 31, 2012 1:42 PM

We taught Atticus how to vacuum so it's like the same thing, right? Serious talk: Tessa is adorable and you have a real gift for capturing these moments. Also, jealous of the juice.

Octohawk January 31, 2012 3:54 PM

THE ONLY JUICE IS FRESH-SQUEEZED JUICE.

No but seriously, homoegenized and pasteurized juice is shit. I'm a Floridian so I can say that. And I have a few orange processing plants that I inspect for work so I really consider myself a legitimate expert in this.

vancybec February 1, 2012 12:41 AM

that kid is crazy cute. i love the stories of grunting whilst picking oranges, drinking juice til her eyes water. ADORABLE! she is going to love reading all these tales when she is bigger.

Olivia Mawhinney February 1, 2012 12:58 PM

No way, she is the cutest! Kids are great help when they're younger....even if things to get muddy for them as a teen.:)They'll grow out of it. We all did!

janis February 1, 2012 9:36 PM

so sweet! i love her braids.

I will miss Florida orange juice so much
